Looking to sell my '13 Z, requesting feedback

Hi guys,

As much as I love the Z, it's completely impractical for my lifestyle. I'm looking to trade up for more of a luxury/sports sedan. With that said, here's my dilemma:

I've got a 2013 model which I bought new in July, only around 5k miles. It's a Magma Red base/sport 7AT in more or less perfect condition.

When I bought it, I paid roughly 35k. I noticed in 2014 that the prices for a similarly equipped Z rose almost 10k. With that in mind, since the 13 and 14 body style is the same, I'm HOPING to be able to sell my car for around 33k and recoup most of the value.

It's completely stock except the stereo and the Homelink mirror, which I plan to remove for the sale.

Thoughts? Am I out of my mind or does this seem feasible?

They did? Did I miss something? Last time I checked, prices on 2014s dropped. I just built a 2014 optioned like yours on Nissan's website for 33k mrsp.

DR_ 12-19-2013 09:31 AM

If you are lucky you will get $29k trade in.

he's right the base price dropped by about 3 grand. On autotrader there is one with the same specs as yours but it also has the touring package for 31k

Check KBB, Truecar, and Autotrader, and see what similar vehicles are selling for. Price it around that range or lower (if you want it gone fast).

I just accidentally learned I can't post links to dealers, but I can tell you the local company where I bought mine is selling a similarly equipped 2014 for 46k. Maybe they're insane?

Yes. They're either dishonest or insane. Nissan's own website has a 2014 optioned like yours for 33k msrp, so a decent haggler could get in under that substantially.

voided 12-19-2013 10:30 AM

Thanks for everyone's feedback - sounds like 29-30k is the best I can hope for. Let's see what happens.

I won't be able to do much until January, but I'm definitely doing some shopping.

Cmike2780 12-19-2013 10:37 AM

Sell it yourself. You'll get raped if you trade it in.

In Texas if you sell it yourself then you will lose the tax savings on the new car. In example on a $30k trade in it would be $1875 in tax savings on new car. So even if you get raped on the trade in price you might come out better.

voided 12-19-2013 11:18 AM

Good point on the tax savings.

Another concern I have is that I am currently on a 0% APR loan, which is pretty nice obviously. I don't believe I'll be able to do that when I buy a used car.

Not true, not if its a non nissan dealer and they don't know what invoice and 14's are running. Their nada books might not show the 14 price drops yet. And trading used for new gets a tax break. For example he paid 35k, that's $2450 in my taxes. If he buys another 35k car and gets 29k for his, he only pays taxes on the 6k. That's only $420. So really he didn't get 29k for his car, he got $31,030. He'd have to go through all the BS phone calls, listings, showings, retarded people showing up and test driving etc and try for 31k just to break even with a dealer.

Edit, O Sh*t, DR already said this.

dtul 12-19-2013 03:35 PM

GL on your sale, my 2014 that I ordered will be $33,900 for base 7AT but every available option it can get. However, there are not many options to add and I assume yours probably has similar, but there is no way you'll get 33k for it. Some people have said about 29K and I would say that is probably the best you can hope for, but I would think that would be a very generous offer. What cars are you thinking of getting?

victort 12-19-2013 09:57 PM

my guess for trade in would be around 26-27,000 from a dealer

MMC Racing 12-19-2013 10:59 PM

The people brining up the tax advantages of trading - that is a state by state thing. Some states (Missouri) allow you to take the tax credit even if sold private party as long as you buy in a certain amount of time. 60 days if I remember right. California gives no tax credits on trades at all, so it is a nonpoint. I wonder what the OPs state does.

Might even come in 25k. The used market for Z's are following the new market for Z's - falling interest.

synolimit 12-20-2013 12:29 AM

I'd trade now!! Being a former dealer I'd hit you mid trade which is $27,500. That's pretty good seeing how a new one invoices close to 30k. If they paid you 27.5k there's not much room for them to make a profit when someone can talk a dealer into invoice on new. Obviously nada hasn't up dated to much yet, but they will.

Funny everyone hated me months ago when I was bitching up a storm how I got ****** on my 13 when the 14 prices came out just 45 days later and I was offered no rebate or apology or anything. Now were all getting bent over. Hate to say I told you so. OP GL.

I think you're right on all points. Tax savings aside, i still prefer the idea of selling privately before I go for another trade. I got raked across the coals when I traded in my Mazdaspeed 3 (I still think getting rid of it was a mistake).

My top choice right now is a used ('07-'10) BMW 335i sedan, but I'm still keeping an open mind. I've thought about a Cadillac ATS/CTS, the new Mercedes CLA (still too new though), Volvo S60 or similar.... pretty much anything with a quiet, comfortable interior, decent amount of storage capacity, low road noise, respectable mileage, and a fair amount of power on tap.

I live in Arizona: we do indeed get tax credits for a trade, but I need to balance the trade price vs. possibility of private sale.

Do you also get credits if you sell it private party and then purchase another vehicle within a set period of time? (like Missouri)

That's scary! Make sure you review this. Look for electrical issues and fuel pump problems!

I loved my 12 regal GS! Everything but power. I mean it got up and went, just not what I wanted it to be. There is a tune for it though for a nice boost of power and drop in's and a custom exhaust (just removed the mufflers with straight pipes) made it sound awesome. Also lowering springs from H&R are nice.

PS its not a Buick, it's an Opel Insigina OPC. German

Out of all of those, I'd buy a CPO G37, IS350 Fsport or TL.

The G37 is still a little too small for my taste - very close in stature to the Z, it's alright but I'm not sure I am convinced. The 350F is an incredible machine, but MUCH more expensive than the other options. I'm trying to keep the budget under 30k.

Acura TL? I used to be a hardcore Honda guy, but I haven't tracked the TL in a number of years. Why do you recommend this one?

To the best of my knowledge, no. I bought a used car via private party a while ago, and I never paid taxes to the seller.

You'll notice I'm just recommending the Japanese options in that space over the used European cars you're looking toward. :rofl2:

Basically buy anything but a Benz or BMW if you plan on keeping it beyond the warranty period.

I think it's funny how polarized people are over this issue. People either swear by European engineering or swear "at" it.

synolimit 12-20-2013 12:27 PM

My 09 c300 has been good, in-laws 07 c270 or something and now their 11 e350 are all good.

I resent that.

I've been giving this a lot of thought over the recent weeks, and based on a number of factors I think I'm ditching the idea of owning a BMW.

I'm just about 99% sold on buying a new WRX base hatchback - much better fit for my lifestyle, relatively inexpensive, and solid as a rock.

1st 12-27-2013 04:59 PM

it's completely impractical for my lifestyle..LoL
2013 model which I bought new in July..That’s a waste
in more or less perfect condition….LoL
Thoughts? Am I out of my mind or does this seem feasible?...Retarted

Well, that was useless. If you insist on calling names, at least spell retarded right.

Lol. I guess what they mean is what lifestyle changes happened in 5 mo that now the z is impractical?
On a side note why not keep the z and find a cheap daily? And I mean cheap as in under 3 grand.

For the sake of the discussion here on the Z forums, I excluded the details from a number of months of discussion, debate, argument, etc.

You asked, so here's my long answer. It goes pretty much like this:

I love the Z, I think it's an exceptional vehicle. It's a sports car, and it does its job well. I thought I wanted a sports car - to be more specific, I've spent most of my life dreaming about my "next, faster, cooler looking car." At the age of 34, I finally reached a point in my life where it was economically feasible, so I bought one.

The first two months were blissful, but as time went on I realized I had made a terrible financial mistake. This car does not match "me" - I never go to the track, I live in a town riddled with cops, speed traps, and heavy traffic. I have a dog which I travel with frequently. I love to spend time outdoors, which means I frequently drive on dirt, gravel, and snow. I love to camp, mountain bike, snowboard, etc, which means I'd like some storage and ideally the ability to hook up a tow hitch for my bike rack or a roof rack for the boards.

I love music and technology - I have a full system in the Z, but the road noise still makes it difficult to enjoy driving. Not to mention it's physically impossible to use my bluetooth speaker phone. I'd like a quieter car, and on a related note I'd like one that's more comfortable. At 6'4" I get a little cramped, and I hate the seats on longer drives.

I need a good car for my daily commute which also lets me do these things. I don't want two cars. I don't have the driveway/garage space for it, I don't want the extra insurance, I don't want the maintenance fees. Least of all, I don't want a shitty car to drive every day - I want a NICE car to drive every day.

A bit long winded, but perhaps that gives you a better perspective from inside my head.
