Road Trip!
Hello everyone this is my first real post/thread. I am in the Marines and stationed in 29 palms thats in Cali if u didnknow. And i plan on purchasing my Z at the end of next
month. The only problem is I want to buy it an register it in my home state of Ohio. So if I do that im gonna have to drive it across the country as soon as i get it. What does everybody think is this a good idea? Or a really bad one for my car? |
You can't legally drive it across country without a temporary plate. Some states allow you to drive without tags on a new car, others don't.
The constant highway miles aren't the best for break-in but it's ok if you keep changing gears and speed once in a while. Registration is mostly a paper work formality so in theory you (or someone in Ohio) can register the car in the state without it ever being there. You would have to mail the title, purchase agreement and relevant DMV/RMV form to someone in the state and have them go to the registration office for you. Sales tax will be the other issue, it is higher in CA than it is in OH and I'm not sure if the dealer in CA will know how to handle that correctly. You might be much better of trying to purchase the car in OH, and then fly over to pick up the car. I nearly bought my car in Maryland and was going to do all the paperwork over the internet and by fax. |
Well my plan is to fly there and buy it lol mybe I should of made that clearer. And if I do fly there does the whole not having tags thing still apply or how long after i purchase would i have to wait to get them. Because i will only have like a week to get the car and hit the road.

Okay, that's a much better plan ;)
You're going to need to ask someone from OH how long that takes. States like MA you get plates on the spot, others like NJ send them to you in the mail up to 60 days later. If they give you temporary cardboard tags and mail the permanent tags to you later that is perfectly fine out of state. |
I personally think it's the perfect way to buy your new car. Just vary the RPM every half an 30 minutes and you should be fine. We drove 800 miles straight in 1 day to bring one of my friends 135i to jersey.
