buying a 370 from a private seller? is this a good idea?
So, i found a guy who is selling his 370 on craigslist. It was his weekend car, has all service records, 15k, sport, base, ect...
Hes asking $27,800, which he saus is under bb value. I have always gone to a dealer to buy a car and was curious on the process to buy a car from an individual, especially one this expensive. Is there more room for negotiations? Is this process complicated? going to the dmv, ect... Obvisously, i would get the car checked out before purchasing it, i would probably take it to a nissan dealership and have them take a look, cost?? im really uncertain on how all this works.... Thanks!! |

Is this a 2009? With those miles, that seems like it is a little over priced for being a private seller. Maybe if it was a touring, but for a base, it seems a little high. Is it an Auto or 6MT?

Have the car inspected by a good mechanic you trust or even a Nissan dealership, also do your own inspection for body damage or anything.
Price can be haggled, look around at a dealership or two to see what a used 370z with similar specs is being sold for. Process I am not 100% sure on.

Thanks.
If this car was silver or pg, i would be all over it, but im unsure on the white....maybe that means i need to wait. Only reason im really considering it is the fact that he took great care of it and i know more of what im getting buying from him vs. a dealer that bought the car at an auction. |

My Z is also my weekend ride, it's a '10, had it since December and have about 6k on it.
Ya, If you are not exactly sure about the color then wait! Make sure you get what you want the first time. Private party > dealer: If you are financing, get pre approved with a credit union or what not, find the car you want then let your lender know. If the guy owns it outright your lender will draft him a check, if he has it financed your lender will draft a check to his lender. Either way, you drive home with the ride. As for DMV, your lender will typically take care of that for you. Otherwise, DMV is very simple to deal with. Maybe a VIN inspection, they basically come out and look at your ride. Say looks good. I've bought more than one car per year since 2006, I know a little. one more thing I wanted to add. I would buy a single owner car any day hands down over anything sitting on a dealers lot being sold as "used". Last edited by Joseph B; 10-19-2010 at 03:51 PM. |

I have never purchased a car through a private sale but I wouldn't be afraid to do it. With the car being a 2009 the remainder of the manufacture warranty should be transferable to the new owner.
But, yeah I do agree that 15K on a weekend only car is quite high. The current owner must be driving it all weekend!

Crap, that price is way too high too! Back in April I bought a 2009 Base+Sport for $25900 no haggle at Ferman Nissan of Tampa.
Also, you can buy a BRAND NEW 2009 touring+sport at Marazzi Nissan for $31k right now. They have two blue 6spds, and two red autos with Nav. Fly over here to FL and get a new one and drive it home or I'm sure there might be a place closer to you that has some left over 2009's.

Couple questions..Why would there still be leftover 09's around?
If you buy a new 09 now, does the warranty start at time of purchase, IE Dec 2010? Why are these being sold for way less than bluebook? Ive seen a couple for around 25k, where bluebook suggests 29k... |

2) Yes, the warranty starts at the date (and mileage) of purchase if bought new. 3) Bluebook pricing is on the high side.

If I buy from a dealership (not nissan but a name brand place via trade in), is the warranty transferred automatically or is that a process i have to do?
In this scenario is there anything else i should check before buying from an administration standpoint? Like checking the vin somewhere other than carfax? |
