days before buying - 7auto or 6manual ?
Hi there,
new here, and its my first theard. i am about to purchase a 2010 370z, here in israel (the 5th buyer all over the state !!! its just fot in here) after test drive on the 7auto transmission - i cant help thinking that its a very good car !!! its seems that its not less sporty than the manual 6 speed. but, i didnt drive the manual and the dealership wont have it till next year. what do you say ? is the 7auto is too much of a compromise ? thanx. |

Word of advice, don't buy a car without test driving it, i.e. don't buy the manual until you test it, you might hate it and regret buying manual instead of an automatic. So, in the end you'd be better off buying the auto as you'll have no regrets.

I 2nd that!
I have a '09 370Z manual w/ the sport package. I do enjoy rowing through the gears, but sometimes it can be difficult to be smooth w/ this transmission vs the old Borg Warner T5/T56 trans. I used to have. I think the 7 speed would be fun to drive and also allow you to keep both hands on the wheel vs having to remove your right hand to shift. If I was to do it all over again I would probably go w/ the auto. Quicker acceleration and lower cruising rpms along w/ smooth shifting make it a winner.

BTW Next time some jerks make fun of you cuz you got a 7spd auto for your Z, tell them its quicker and I can keep both hands on my wheel ALSO Tell them to go make fun of the people who drives the Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Astons, Buggatis, and every other supercar that uses auto because its just quicker. seriously even F1 even uses it these days. I mean it's one thing when you can have your own opinion and your own personal preference, but when you make fun of other people's car just cuz you dont like it or think you dont prefer it , you have no respect for other cars and enthusiast which makes them a bad enthusiast sometimes thats what stopping ppl from buying the auto for their sports car even though they want it. just sad, I know |

I had to chime here as I was also conflicted in this choice. I went for the 6MT. The 7AT is certainly faster, however, I was looking moreso for a fun driving experience. I just knew that if I got the 7AT, every time I slipped behind the wheel of my buddies Z06, father's supercharged Stang GT, brother in law 1's KA turbo S14, brother in law 2's SR20DET S14 and had some foot and shifting action, I would be very disapointed to step back into my Z and pull levers.
It really comes down to what you want. Are you in stop and go traffic? Is speed your concern, or a fun driving experience. Now that I have made you choice more difficult, enjoy your decision process! |

I test drove both transmissions before I settled on the 6 speed manual. Truth be told, I had my heart set on a manual because my last car was an automatic and while I appreciated some of the strengths it had, I always loved every second of driving a manual transmission car.
The 6MT has some quicks like a very high engagement point and certain shifts require you to take your time to get smoothly but this is my first manual transmission car and I enjoy every gear shift.

You won't regret either choice. The Auto in the Z is still a slushbox, but it really is a good transmission. Nissan should really offer a dual-clutch set-up.
As far as being faster, it really depends on who's driving, especially with a manual trans. Just about anyone with a right foot can get consistent pulls with the auto, but the manual will require a lot more skill to launch properly. I've also heard the 6-speed being faster and vice-versa, so you can't really go by that assumption. Also realize that the 6-speed transmission is on the noisy side. In the end, I personally went with the manual because I like rowing thru the gears and you feel more connected to the car....and isn't that one of the main reason you would choose a sports car in the first place.

I agree, the automatic transmission doesn't make the Z any less of a sports car and it does make it easier to drive, especially for the ladies.

haha yeah I know they are the dual clutch type transmissions that are lightning fast(thats part of the reason why they are so amazing). but that doesnt give those people who make fun of the OP anymore right to make fun of his auto Z
I'm just gettin the back of the ppl like the OP besides those people who makes fun of the OP doesnt care whether the exotics are auto or not because they are exotics just like people who doesnt know much about cars, maybe a mom, are they going to like the 370z more or maybe for example a 135i? all I'm saying is that people overlook the specs of the car and just look at the brand and immediately thinks its better at everything. ppl should realize autos are getting more and more advanced. especially one thats on a real sports car like the 370z haha maybe I might be getting this in over my head! |
