How to bargain for Special Order Custom 370Z?
First off, I don't have much experience in buying cars.
I am trying to buy a 2009 370Z, and I want to get a 6-Speed Manual, Touring w/Sport's Package, Navigation, Black ext w/ Black interior. With the criteria I mentioned above, it's nearly impossible to find a match even if color is not a priority, that's why the dealership pretty much told me I'll have to custom order it. I am told that normally when you customize a car you pretty much can't expect to apply the same kind of bargaining method you would with a car that's already in their lot. So am I out of luck and simply just pay the MSRP or even more? Does the dealership pretty much have the upper hand in this case and I have no power in bargaining to reduce it close to invoice? I heard internet sales are pretty much the way to go now a days, but I had the dealership search all over and can't find a match within any inventory in California (where I live). So in this case, how do anyone bargain for something they don't have in store to get the best deal? I don't mind flying down to so-cal to pick up the car, but how do i begin in searching for the right place to buy the car? This is seriously the dream car for me, since it's pretty much around 40K...I much rather be picky and get the one I want. So if anyone can help me in any way I greatly appreciate!:nutswinger: |

I'm also interested as I'm having a similar problem.

i say...patience is the key and the ability to just say "OK, thank you for your time"
i been haggling for about 3 weeks now two visits to dealers and mostly phone calls. and i am close to signing a deal. feel free to PM me if you want more details. |
I walked into my dealership with 3 things in mind. 1) I am going to order a car that is EXACTLY the way I want it... 2) I am going to pay what I think is fair (same price as if the car had been sitting on the lot... and 3) I'll walk away if I can't get the price I want. Shop for your special order the same way you'd shop for any vehicle. Do your research and price out a fair deal. Offer that to the salesman. If he says yes, then great! you've got your baby for a fair price... if he says no, just walk away.

Special ordering it should be the same process. If the salesman wants to be an *******, the tried-and-true method of simply leaving, works very often.
Personally, I plan to go in and lay it all out from the beginning: I can find plenty of places online charging invoice or LESS for these, new. I want it for invoice. No? OK, bye. And wait for them to call. |
+1 what Trema said. That was my exact strategy. took me 3 weeks, but ordered my Z for 800+ under invoice. persistence and the willingness to walk away are key.

800+ under invoice? I would think a car this new is impossible to even get invoice. I have the patience to wait and willingness to walk away, but the car i'm asking for is pretty much top of the line, so the price difference between Invoice and what the dealer wanna make (MSRP price) is even more. I read that in lot of bargaining articles to start with invoice price first to negotiate, so I doubt I can even get invoice price, not to mention below invoice. I am very impressed takimbe, any more insights? I guess you already told me, persistence and willingness to walk away.
Wow, thank you for such great advices everybody! I haven't stepped my foot in the door of any dealerships yet, but I do want to test drive a Synchro-Rev one and to see one in person. It's probably a better idea for me to wait till I have the money to sign any papers. I don't know if this is true: Since for special order cars the dealer has to order them in (which takes 3-4 months), I obviously have to pay some kind of deposit, but what incentive does the salesman have on giving me a good price....not to mention he has no insurance of me buying the car (simply a deposit - which means I could back out anytime I want) Doesn't that make it harder for buyer to negotiate for a price on the day of ordering the car? As oppose to a car in their lot, they have 100% insurance you're buying the car that day since you're signing to pay for the whole vehicle rather a small deposit. i dunno...just wondering... |
well I got 500 off invoice right off the bat. User TacoZ went to the dealership today and ALSO got 500 off invoice. Since I was their first buyer interested in a Z (they just opened), I asked them to throw in free kick plates and splash guards, which is about 320 invoice, and they agreed, so add that to 500 off invoice, and youve got ~800 off invoice :)
I am just very firm. I go in and tell them 'hey, other guys are offering me either invoice and best offer ive got is XXXX dealer with 500 off invoice. If you cant do that, then lets not waste each others time, but if you can, lets sit and talk about a deal. |
takimbe, what dealer did you go to for this, in what city/state?
Thanks |
pm me for the info. But it was in Southern California...although im sure they would have no problem shipping a car to you.
