There's ways around all that. Nissan doesn't use their own maps. The whole GPS program is made by another company. You can get the update for stitched maps directly from map vendors since most use the same formats for everything. Why pay the dealer markup???

To say the least, my experience with updating OEM GPS systems in cars is about nil

So, I didn't know there were work-arounds. Kinda cool though.

Yeah. Just think of it from a Nissan CEO prospective... If you didn't want to spend a hundred million dollars on getting the maps for your nav system, you'd want to outsource it, right? Well, there's about 4 big companies out there that put the GIS (global information system) map information together. They've invested the millions into that business. Then they sell the data to the GPS software writers (like Garmin and Tom Tom) and then they sell that software to OEM providers (like AC Delco or Bose) and finally, that makes it to Nissan.

So if you cut out a bunch of the middle people, you can get the map data for dirt cheap!
