And I'll bet they will try to sell it for close to original retail.

Doubt that. But 30-31 seems about right.

I sold used cars for about 7 months and completely hated every minute of it but needed a job. As posted above, people are buying cars with their feelings and not listening to their jimmy cricket. The average used car profit is 6k. Long story short do your homework, dont even hesitate to leave even if you really want the damn car. Try buying at the end of the month, towards the last 2 months of the year. And to the OP here in Ca I found several 2010 base models for 28500. Dont pay anything more for an 09.

Ok man Im lying. I never saw the dealer jackets on any of the vehicles I sold. Ex. 2002 ford mustang Gt.. dealer cost 11200 sold for 17k. this was back in 2003. If used cars only had the room you say above before haggling then no used car dealerships would make any money unless they sold a crap load of extended warranty's. Bud I know you are new but do some homework.

in the defense of dealers, you are selling the car to someone who has no interest in actually using the car at all, ONLY selling it. why would they buy it for even close to the fair market value, if thats what they are going to have to trade it for.

I have a similar experience here in San Diego, not with a Z though but a 2009 Audi A4 Premium Plus, Nav etc... i bought it out the door 45k and some change, rolled off the lot and not for trade in im looking at 25k talk about a loss, I'm bored with the car, and sick of check engine lights. So i am eating about 18k(upside down 6 now and putting down 8-10) to do a trade in. I'm hoping my *** doesnt get expanded, and i will have a smile on my face when i get the Z.

One was yellow with 13,100 miles and the dealer was asking 30,600 for it and the lowest they would go is 30k even. Had several small chips on the hood and needed new tires. I pretty much laughed and walked away. Found the other one on the internet and it was silver with 11k miles. Didn't really inquire further but they wanted over 30k for that one too.

Is it just me or are those prices way too high? I could use VPP pricing and get a 2010 for that much.

Given the economy I would probably be willing to pay 25-26k for a used base + sport and if 21-22k is really what they are giving for trade, then 25-26 should more than reasonable to pay used.
So they are pretty much asking for the same price as a NEW 2010 370Z Manual Sport aren't they?

I would only pay $24k max for a 2009 370Z sport right now. If it's anymore, I'll just wait until October when Nissan turns on the heat with either cash or financing incentives. You figure the price has only one way to go - down, which will put even more downward pressure on used prices.

One of the dealerships i work for took in a 2009 370z with 8k miles for $26k range and i believe are asking around $29,999. 80% of the cars i see traded in are marked up $2k-$4k depending on how much it cost throught the shop. It's the high end cars that have the Huge Mark ups. Try a BMW M6 marked up like 12k over cost.. Typically the Price is talked down anyways but just a heads up to the person that said $6k Gross in used cars.... Not these days.

Most Dealers i work for want to atleast make $1k+ profit unless the vehicle has sat and they need to move it as it is costing them money to saty on the lot. Remember Dealers are paying interest on most cars on the lot.

So basically they're asking for the same price as a brand new 2010 370Z Coupe 6MT Sport?

Honestly, I think the dealership bought the 2009 at too high of a price. If you can walk into a dealership to buy a brand new 2010 model for $30.8k, then the max I'd pay for a used identical 2009 370Z is about $27k. Any more than that, and buying used is not worth the savings from buying new.

And that applies if the buyer can pay cash for both new and used. If buyer has to finance, then it's a done deal. The used and new car will certainly end up costing the same when you factor in interest rate differentials between new and used car loans.
