Dynamics of selling after 2 years?
Hi guys,
Here's my situation, I'm an immigrant and might need to return to my home country after 2 years. So I'm trying to work some worst case numbers here. If I buy a base Z say at 30k + tax = say 35k just for the example's sake. I pay off half of the loan + interest etc. in the 2 years. I get forced to leave the country. I try to sell to a private party but have no luck. So now I sell it off to a dealer and get lesser right? The question is... what kind of numbers are we talking here? I did look up resale values of 2006 models and its surely over half of the car's price. Are there any hidden losses due to loan transfers or any other things? Bottom line, if I am forced to sell it in a week and must accept whatever I get - will I get back half the value of the car? Assume average annual mileage, good condition etc. |

If you are forced out in a week, and you paid half the loan down, you should still be in an equity position. I can't really tell you what NY is doing for pricing for Z's, but you would have to at least see a 4k difference for used to new retail. So if Z's are selling for 27K in NY for base, then I would guess a buy figure of 20-21K. The only thing is depreciation to worry about, if you sell it there isn't any hidden losses, or fees.
Bottom line you will be in an equity situation if you find a buyer. |

...if I find a buyer... --> wouldn't the dealership "just take it back" to add to its' certified pre-owned inventory and (of course) offer me 'peanuts' for it? Say $15,000?

No I want to keep it... I will probably stay in the country and pay off the regular loan etc. but I want to factor out visa issues etc. and plan accordingly. I should be able to get rid of it and not make a "large" loss if I have to leave the country.

Of course buddy, I'm just trying to work my numbers considering the worst case sceanrio:
<i>"...I get forced to leave the country. I try to sell to a private party but have no luck. So now I sell it off to a dealer..."</i> I want to work my numbers on what I know I have a 'guarantee' to get... so what I"m trying to learn here is.. if its possible to close your eyes and leave the country in the next month- and be able to go to the dealer and get "something" straight up... and if that "something" will be more than $15,000 or not. |

your best bet would be to link up with Joe (a sponsored dealer here) at koeppel nissan, seeing as how he is in your region and will most likely have the info you need/want...

What I meant was, if I buy a 2009 today, and sell it in 2011 will I get $15k... In other words, if I sell a 2007 350z back to a dealer, will I easily get $15k?... kbb says lot more than $15k but I still want to consider a worst case. Like, if I tell a dealer hey I'm happy with $15k, will he close his eyes and take the car back or not...

if the economy doesnt fall off anymore and atleast maintains, you should theoretically get atleast 17k as long as you keep the miliage down and keep it in excellent condition...
i based that off of going to kbb and doing a few comparos with a 07 touring low miles and excellent condition...

I understand what your asking but I can't honestly give you a number. Steve mentions a great point on KBB, but it still may not be the case in 2 years. I wish I had a crystal ball to tell you a number, but your guess is as good as ours. The Z's residuals are even guess by the financial institutions, and they are usually wrong all the time. The Z has a 60% residual for 2 years, will it end up holding that who knows.
