It really depends on what kind of pictures do you shoot mostly, I was shooting a tennis tournament one time during the night session, even the aperture was set to f/2.8, I still have to push the ISO to at least 400+. Some of the f/2.8 is not that $$$, there's a 35-70mmf/2.8 from Nikon, retail for about $500ish, it's an old model, no motor, but the picture comes out top notch. |

I would love to get a fast telephoto lens as well, only problem is they are big $$. The night shots I took at Petit Le Mans were taken with an ISO of 25.6k. I didn't want to go that high but it was the only way to get something decent. Anything lower and all i got was blurry shots. If anyone sees a 200 or 300mm lens for a nikon at a good price, let me know

25.6k is pretty high, I usually just keep mine at 3200iso, ive been using my 16-85mm non-stop lately, I only use my 70-300mm for close up things, landscapes or things my 16-85mm cant reach.
Im getting better at learning the settings, I use the "P" professional setting now instead of auto, lowered the flash alittle bit as well. Angles & lighting are everything, still need to learn more tho.

It depends on what I want. When i was shooting the cars at petit le mans, I used the shutter priority mode. I wanted to make sure the speed was were I needed it to be to get a useable shot. Once it got dark due to the aperture I was forced to use at 300mm the only way to get a decent shot was by cranking up the ISO. When I have the time, I prefer to use full manual. I find it more fun to experiment with the settings than letting the camera try to figure it out.
