It's ok for nowadays photography, cos the noise control on modern DSLR is very good, even at ISO 600, the noise is still ok, so the f/5.6 shouldn't cause as much problem as the old day when using film, and you can use PhotoShop afterwards to make some minor adjustment.

Surely, f/2.8 is always attractive.

Bright outdoor shots are fine and even indoors with a speedlight flash is okay. It gets a little harder for those action shots and low light situations where a flash isn't feasable. I also usually don't like setting the ISO higher than I have to. It stays on ISO 100 95% of the time. Even with the latest camera noise reduction, it's just not as sharp using a higher ISO. f/2.8 would be awesome though. I just can't justify spending that much for pro glass.

An ISO 100 doesn't allow you to do too much if the the lens if f/3.3+.

It really depends on what kind of pictures do you shoot mostly, I was shooting a tennis tournament one time during the night session, even the aperture was set to f/2.8, I still have to push the ISO to at least 400+.

Some of the f/2.8 is not that $$$, there's a 35-70mmf/2.8 from Nikon, retail for about $500ish, it's an old model, no motor, but the picture comes out top notch.

Depends on available light and I usually shoot with a tripod... and/or with a speedlight. It still gets tricky with an f/2.8, but it certainly gives you a bit more leeway. The bokeh is nice too. I have a 50mm f/1.8 prime in the bag also, so it's not like I'm totally limited.

I would love to get a fast telephoto lens as well, only problem is they are big $$. The night shots I took at Petit Le Mans were taken with an ISO of 25.6k. I didn't want to go that high but it was the only way to get something decent. Anything lower and all i got was blurry shots. If anyone sees a 200 or 300mm lens for a nikon at a good price, let me know

25.6k is pretty high, I usually just keep mine at 3200iso, ive been using my 16-85mm non-stop lately, I only use my 70-300mm for close up things, landscapes or things my 16-85mm cant reach.

Im getting better at learning the settings, I use the "P" professional setting now instead of auto, lowered the flash alittle bit as well. Angles & lighting are everything, still need to learn more tho.

It depends on what I want. When i was shooting the cars at petit le mans, I used the shutter priority mode. I wanted to make sure the speed was were I needed it to be to get a useable shot. Once it got dark due to the aperture I was forced to use at 300mm the only way to get a decent shot was by cranking up the ISO. When I have the time, I prefer to use full manual. I find it more fun to experiment with the settings than letting the camera try to figure it out.
