Default exhaust installation // sound check // dyno run

Hey folks,

just wanted to share a video I made a few weeks ago for my newly installed exhaust system.

I did a base dyno run and the car ended up with 336HP (best run) being totally stock - very nice starting point

after the exhaust was installed I dyno'ed again (same dyno, one day later) and best run was 347HP.

The average difference between all runs made was always about 10-12HP.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtrhLuhLlpk

before someone asks, yes this is basically the exhaust system already discussed here in the forums but with a cut-out option installed (as mentioned in the video).

hope you like it !

Chris

nice. I miss having an exhaust cutout, and the instant opportunity to be obnoxious.

Looks like good power gains too!

sounds amazing!
Whats this cut-out option that you mention? Is it something the shop did for you or an option on the the prospeed N1 offers?
Do you have a button you press to change between race and street?

its a modification to the original 5Zigen Design where you have a resonator between the two mufflers. We added a flange there so you can go from "street legal" to "race" by swapping the resonator with a 90° cut-out pipe.

The really nice thing with this mod is that when at idle the exhaust sounds completely "street" and only when depressing the throttle over say 50% the cutout makes that extra noise. So you can drive the exhaust daily even with the cutout mounted and it only gets loud when you wish to.

The reason for keeping the resonator as an option is mainly because we need a "ECE-certificate" (ECONOMIC COMMISSION FOR EUROPE) for being street legal.

Chris

PS: all outdoor scenes and the final dyno run are with the cutout installed while the sound during the exhaust installation is with the resonator mounted (driving the car at the F1 Grandprix track Hockenheimring in Germany).

Not to be crazy and all but I highly doubt you are at 336 with just an exhaust.
That's crazy...
Secondly what kind of dyno was this?
Sounds alright.

I think you are on a very optimistic dyno, it is highly unlikely you put out more power with just a catback than most do with full intake/tune/exhaust. That said, it sounds great and cool video editing!

At the risk of starting a huge war... I've noticed that whatever kind of dynamometer tends to be widely available in Europe always seem to read high, and the estimates they provide should be interpreted as crank hp NOT whp.

Also, Pferdestarke (PS) units are a lil bit higher than hp...

see further here Power Units Conversion Calculator

On a dynojet that car would be putting down around 288 - 290, SAE corrected, which is about right for a nice exhaust on an otherwise stock Z.

yes, in Europe we always talk about crank HP, not WHP !!! that would be crazy numbers ;-)

also PS is a bit higher than HP I have already converted that.

My car had a very good base line dyno run which was better than what NISSAN advertises.

I checked the dyno sheets again and the
STOCK exhaust dyno was: 215.9kW at the wheels --> 289 WHP
prostreet n1 dyno was: 220.1kW at the wheels --> 295 WHP

hope that makes more sense now :-)

That's still a bit higher than would probably be found on a dynojet... but different dynamometers read differently

In any case -- the % improvement from baseline, whichever values you go by looks about right for an exhaust with factory cats.

Haha, sorry for my comment then as I did not know. Still, nice gains!
