HDR experiment (40th Anni)
Snapped two photos: Standard first, then HDR. I don't have any fancy software yet, so the HDR was done in-camera. What do you think?

second is much better, but still is overexposed a bit. HDR in a camera, huh? Neat, but I still prefer a skilled hand at photoshop. The second shot brought out the detail tenfold compared to the first!
What camera BTW? |

Camera is a Pentax K-x. I am a total noob, and will be taking some courses in DSLR photography over the next few months. Not looking to make anything of this, but I would like to take better shots for personal use.
The in camera HDR function is cool, but kinda a novelty considering there is basically no ability to customize the image to your tastes. Still, it got me interested enough to pursue this further. I'm thinking about purchasting photoshop elements 8 after I learn to use the camera a bit better. I had the camera on a tripod to take the 3 consecutive shots which the camera converts to a single image internally. It was a bit windy and so the tree is the background came out funny looking since the leaves were in different spots for each shot. Looks sorta cartoonish. |

I think anyone who really wants to get into HDR would have to get good software anyway. Any recommendations? |
photomatix or photoshop cs3 or newer, either will be fine, but photomatix is far more pronounced than photoshop. I prefer to use both, start with photoshop, then use photomatix, then back to photoshop for final editing.

Wow, lots of detail in the 2nd pic. I wish my camera did that!
I got this from the 2nd pic when I played with the levels: http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...ttt/levels.jpg Exposure is similar to the first pic, but with much more detail. |
that looks good

I think i did that one with aperture priority using a high F-stop to maximize depth of field. The full auto mode used a larger aperture and blurred the distant objects including the front wheels to some extent.
I did play with the levels using the very limited options in the inluded Pentax software. I think I was the one who overexposed that shot. Straight from the camera it actual looked a bit dull to me. |
