Lol, hey look who it is. My little buddy Tadpole!! Whats up brother? This is a perfect thread for you to brag about your 7AT. Make sure to let the OP know how many cars you've beaten at the strip.

My best time so far is a 13.35 quarter mile and can post up time slips if you would like to see them. I thought you were coming down to see me in that new viper or C7 since I have no one to talk to.

Ibtl.
Be proficient and learn stick somewhere else. The 6MT will always be available once you are ready. I understand the ops' question but concerned about the ops safety and of the others'. The excitement is clouding judgement. You have to have command of the car. If you are just learning on you're way home, you may never get there.

OP - As you can see, there are some pretty strong opinions on this topic. I've driven both ATs and manuals over the last 40+ years, and I can assure you that the Z's 7AT is second to none. It's very enjoyable to drive, IMHO just as enjoyable as the 6MT (but, of course, in a different way). I've had my Z going on 6 years now and have never regretted purchasing the 7AT version. And, again just IMHO, don't listen to these guys saying that you shouldn't get a Z as your first manual transmission car. Learning how to drive a manual Z isn't any different than learning how to drive a manual on any other passenger car. If you want a 6MT, go for it and have someone who knows how to drive a manual take you to an empty parking lot or dirt lot and show you how. It won't take long to learn, and before long you'll be driving your Z with a big grin on your face! Oh yeah, and I'd definitely recommend that you get the Sport or Sport/Touring model (for more reasons than just the SynchroRev Match feature). Whichever transmission you choose, you'll be buying a great car and will have a lot of fun with it!

I have tought her how to drive a MT but some people are just not cut out for a MT no matter how much they try.... Do what you want and what makes you happy... its your car that all that matters... I will say the AT in this car is one of the best I personaly have ever driven.... Good luck and post pics of what you get...

When I bought my 350z in 08 it was the first manual tranny I had owned. I had driven a few manuals before this, but never for an extended period of time. I was a little sketchy on the test drive & drive home, but I wouldn't say unsafe. And I was really happy I went manny instead of auto. For me it was a lot more fun. And I dont even want to drive an auto now, at least not in a car on the sporty side. I went with the 6 speed 370z recently and I am loving life. Downshifting has become addicting, lol.
in my opinion I would get the manny and baby her until you get more comfortable. Worst thing that happens is you stall it periodically, and maybe burn a little clutch. Or trash the clutch and flywheel, which are replaceable. Hope this helps. And enjoy what ever decision you make and don't let people rag on you for what you decide. It is still a Z at the end of the day, and dead sexy. |

Just keep the M/T on flat roads till you get the hang of it. Hills are not your friend during the learning curve.

I'd get the 6MT. My friend had never driven a stick before getting his mustang. He just took a couple hours of drivers ed with a manual car and he was fine. It's not as bad as people make it out to be. But drive safely and avoid the twisties until you know how to handle the car.

OP, I had a auto Z, loved it. Recently someone totaled my car. I drove a Honda civic 5 speed for an hr got the hang of it. Drove my friends 350z around 3 blocks and got the gang of it. First gear is always tough but you play with the clutch. On a flat surface put it in first gear let go of the brake and play with the clutch untill the car stars moving foward on it own that's the sweet spot from there you gas a bit and bam you got first gear. I will be picking up my 2015 NISMO tech 6mt in a week. I'll be learning on that for a while. As long as you baby it , don't worry the clutch dosent burn that easily as long as you know the basics. Clutch in , gear, clutch out slowly that's it.
