last i heard, they were looking at developing a lightweight RWD platform for the IDx and then using that same platform to also make the next Z. don't be so sure about anything that comes out in the news though...as far as Nissan is concerned i think they are trying to keep a tight lid on what they are planning for future sports cars unlike when the 370Z was being developed and alot of images of it were being leaked on to the internet against Nissan's wishes.

I always wanted Nissan to move towards a 3 sports car line, but as many others have pointed out to me on this forum, that would have been very unusual for them to pull off. That article helps support the "only 2 sports car" comments I've been told. It makes a lot of sense.
What has me curious, is if Nissan will do the IDx or the Z. The Z has a long history, but the IDx generated a lot of interest. However I've seen articles stating if Nissan does the IDx, it would not look as ambitious as the original demo design that was seen in car shows. Given that a lot of the IDx charm was it's agressive retro look, I would voice Nissan go with building another Z. However IF they could pull off that retro appearance with the production IDx, I wouldn't be disappointed if Nissan retired the Z-brand for awhile, and made the IDx. After all, just because Nissan lets the Z rest for a few years, doesn't mean we'll never see it again. ***EDIT*** On another note... all this speculation news (speculation leaks?), at least from the wording of how executive decision making is still being made, leads me to believe the current Z will still be around until 2016. I'm guessing the new Z (or IDx) will hit market in 2017. Last edited by Nargrakhan; 10-07-2014 at 06:42 AM. |

Yeah, not an issue if the Z shares a smaller platform with the IDx. It's smart business. And there's nothing to stop Nissan from stretching or shrinking the platform to fit the specific car it underpins. That's what all manufacturers do.
If the Z starts from a smaller platform, it could shed some weight.

I do not know what to believe after so many conversations like this one. I guess I'll have to wait until the unveiling.

I remember when we though the Z35 would be unveiled at the tokyo auto show last year. and based on the article it still doesn't look like the Z35 is finalized. It make take a few more years, sadly.

Sounds like nissan has no idea what it's going to do with the next Z. They want the entry level sports car, the Z sports car and the supercar in their lineup. It's actually smarter if the idX is the lowest tier in the Z setup and the Z is the highest, kind of like how their is a impreza then wrx then STi. But if the idX and Z are 2 different platforms and if the next Z doesn't do well its definitely getting the axe lol.
btw lot of 'interesting' comments in the jalopnik article http://jalopnik.com/the-next-nissan-...e-m-1643094196 Last edited by Virtual; 10-07-2014 at 01:52 PM. |
