Love the Paddle Shifters
I love the paddle shifters on a tight twisty road when keeping both hands on the wheel is a good idea. Probably isn't a big deal on a track or a more open road.
I went up the newly paved GA SR180 this weekend where the penalty for error is pretty big. They worked great. I also went over the Cherohala Skyway but they aren't really a big deal there. They are just another toy to play with while having a good time in the Z. |
Shhh. The manual boys might get butt hurt reading this post. Keep this on the low down chief.

See. I told ya.

OP... that's cool. Glad you're having fun. I like rowing the gears on my manual around tight twisty roads but I'd like to try the paddle shift thing too. I hear autos are a little faster but you'll never hear us admit that either.

I agree with "to each their own". My very first experience with paddle shifters on the Z was on a track. I was completely befuddled. My shifts were terrible, and my lines were all over the place. I even hit the windshield wiper stalk unnecessarily. Of course, the GoPro was right above one, making it bend horribly :shakes head:
I got back into my own 6MT a few hours later on the same track and felt like I was home :driving: My wife really wants a 7AT Z now (it was her 6MT Z originally). I think it would be a great idea - I can get more practice with those paddle shifters :icon17: |

I had to opt for the 7at for a couple reasons and wasn't thrilled about it but for a standard slush box it's pretty amazing. It's certainly not on par with a true dual clutch but the maintenance and reliability on those things can really be hit or miss so I'm quite happy with Nissan's choice. I actually have paddle shifters in my veloster too. Never use it because it is annoying. |
Love the Paddle Shifters
..

I love my paddles. They keep my boat afloat.
|
I have driven both.... I can say I'm very impressed by the 7AT in the 370z... not so much in other cars.... I made my choice to get the 7AT because it's a blast to drive.. and my ole lady can drive it as well....(well when she needs to at least) lol... OP where in GA are you??
|
I mainly use mine for downshifing when I see the light turn red from a far. I need to use them more often but not too many twisty roads where im at.
|
 The 7at is good for torque converter trans. I prefer the manual but to each his own. If the Z had a dual clutch, I probably would've gotten it.

I'll reserve judgment on the Z paddles until I actually try them out. But on every car I've ever tested (mostly Mercedes) they were absolute sh1te. And don't get me started on "manual mode" on the G37.:shakes head:
Regardless, using a clutch pedal is something EVERYBODY who owns a sports car and claims to be an enthusiast should be able to do whether their current car has one or not.:ugh2: |
oh how lovely. another auto vs. manual thread.
 welp i'm here now. who wants to tangle? |

Well can't say how the Z paddles are but I have experienced the good and bad from Lexus.
07 is250 paddle shifters were 'cool' at first but then the shifts were delayed which really annoyed me. the 14 is350 paddle shifters are a little more low profile, has a better tactile feedback and also the shifts are dramatically quicker. I think technology has come a long way in the past few years for the automatics. That said I still have a hunch that MT will be phased out from the majority of manufacturer's over the next decade. |
i will say this. i've driven many different cars with paddles and "manual mode" and 95% suck balls.
the Z's tranny is totally different than most i've used and it's amazing. |
I love the paddles. I use them when my Z is acting real naughty. I'm all like, "go faster you dirty girl." *paddle* *paddle* *paddle* And she's all like, "vroom, vrooooom, vrooooooom!!!" After throwing me back into the seat, she's get all wild with those turns.

track, drag strip, backroads - i use the paddles for the control of both hands on the wheel. |
Lol the reason I was hesitant to get into a 370z was the manual transmission felt heavy and clunky. I know some people say its "raw " or whatever but for an entry level sports car and daily driver that would get annoying . The first to second shifting has to be perfect.. Nissan should stick to automatics because I hear the same issue with 4.0vq frontier drivers. They love the automatic tranny hate the manual. You can actually feel the torque in the auto with the 370z also.

kamzee- you're socal, get the AT and carve those canyons. if you want to learn how to drive MT, just get another car for that. no need to try to learn the art on the Z. the Z's MT isn't really clunky but it is more for an advanced MT driver.

when you hit one the gear changes are very quick with no delay. i have thoroughly tested the hell out of mine. trust me. my car has never been placed in just "D". it's always in manual mode and i shift every gear up and down. well except 2nd to 1st. thats a no no in the 7AT Z. you let the car do that one. i've never lost a race to a 6MT and dont plan on it lol they are large paddles as stated before so even when on the dragon and running hard they are easy to find and make the gear changes. |
Yea the 2-1 shift I don't even do unless in a parking lot or similiar circumstance and I'm in a Mt with srm.
Good to know they use the same shifters as the gtr |
6 speed rocks. Driving an automatic Z It's like riding an automatic Harley Davidson. (if existed) (and if you know about motorcycles) ruins the fun out of everything.
