About to hit 1200 miles...

Anything special to do now that breakin is over? Time for the first oil change?

Why did they make us try to stay under 4K anyway? I'm a newbie to real sports cars and would like to know.

The theory is that the engine parts need a little time to wear in and fit properly. The value of engine break-in is an often-debated point.

Nothing special to do. Follow the owner's manual. Oil change at 5000 miles.

I did my first oil change at 1200 miles and converted to synthetic oil at that time. I always like to do the first oil change after the break-in period to get metal shaving and such flushed out of the engine. If you follow the manual to the T then nothing to do just yet.

:iagree:

This man speaks the truth. Go ahead and do an oil change.

Back in The Good Old Days, doing the first oil/filter change at 500-1500 miles could make a big difference in engine life. Even today, it's a good idea if you want to get maximum longevity. But for most people, with modern manufacturing processes and lubes, it's just not that big of a deal (at least with a DD). Since you care enough to ask, I'd go ahead and change at 1000-1500 miles, but waiting until 3750 or so will not really hurt. Keep an eye on the oil condition and change if anything looks "funny."

After break in is when you start to enjoy your car, step on that gas, HARD, and drive the hell out of it :driving:

Love it. Seriously a cool place.

That settles it. I'm going to set up my first oil change for next weekend... they sent me a coupon for a hand wash/wax as well.

I'm so glad you guys are such a great community even for those of us stuck in DD mode, who might not be upgrading our Z in the short term. I love my ride and catch myself finding excuses to go for a drive, just to spend time with "her".

I did my first oil change at 1200 miles also. Went to synthetic oil and a K&N filter. Also installed one of those magnetic oil drain plugs. Then I found a curvy road and mashed down my right foot.

I agree. It's not necessary, but if you're worried about it, go ahead and change it. Consider it buying peace of mind for $75

kenchan 10-06-2014 09:00 AM

some cars it requires 1208 miles for break in, otherwise the car blows up...

jpkirk 10-06-2014 09:30 AM

Scrrreeeeeee, there's the curve ball.

:hello: kenchan

:rofl2:

I stopped at 1200 in the middle of I-95. Did my oil change in the fast lane!

jpkirk 10-06-2014 09:38 AM

But seriously.

I did mine at 3750. Others here are not wrong for changing earlier. Just depends on prefereance. What I did do was stop, take a picture, then do a first and second gear 7K+ RPM run.

That was cool. :driving:
