Z mileage test

I wanted to see what the car could max at. Made it to 461 miles and filled up to 17.8 gallons. The computers last read was 29 miles left and then it flat lined and just blinked. Not doing that again, might damage something. just for anyone who is interested.

I fill up at half a tank just to ward off fuel starve issues. byproduct of this is no worries about the gauge that says 50 miles left and goes to 0 in half a mile :icon17:

Jimbo370 09-08-2014 10:06 PM

It is plain English. If you don't have anything nice to say then DON'T POST. nobody likes a ****. What distance have you pushed your car? I now Know that I can drive 460+ miles on 1 tank. THIS SUPPOSE TO BE A NICE FORUM NO BULLIES

Question of the day. Are you a He or a She......................

This reminds me of that one Seinfeld episode where Kramer drives on E.

Ok, with all jokes aside, just be careful, anything less than a quarter tank reduces the life your fuel pump. The gas lubes and cools your pump since it is electric. Then you could blow your flux capacitor causing ripples in space and time.

Also thanks for the info

So are you basically saying that at less than quart a tank the pumps are not fully submerged in gasoline?

ZeeBabar 09-09-2014 06:18 AM

I did it as well. Returning home, the range started coming saying 36 or so miles. I thought I would just make it to my usual gas station where I could also get car washed. It disappeared and some blinking occurred and I was very nervous that I will not make it. Pulled in and put in 17.7 or so in the tank. I had driven fast most of the last 100 miles, around 95 mph on average, ranging between 80 and 105 but when the range came on, I slowed down. I think I did about 450 miles.

Smashley 09-10-2014 05:12 PM

I am getting roughly 400-420 per tank full

JEEZUS, I really had no idea what you meant.

As for damaging something. What's there to damage? The fuel pump maybe if you keep running it dry. (And because I'm a nice, and I think knowledgeable forum member, I like to keep the spread of misinformation at a minimum...) BUT if you didn't fill 19 gallons you didn't get close to running it dry. I have gotten 500+ miles on a tank. And I have filled 19.1-19.2 gallons on many occasions without any issues.

Meh, just don't run it to bone dry over and over.

A gallon is more than enough to keep the pump cool and lubed (unless you make a hard long sweeping right and you get fuel starved)

aszyd 09-10-2014 07:07 PM

I may be wrong, but I suspect that one of the reasons the car shows empty at 2 gal is because those two gallons are still there to cool the pump. That, and human stupidity, so the driver has some "reserve" when the tank shows empty. Myself, I have put in 18.something, once, and I never want to do it again. That's pushing it in my book.

Because Canada, I can't remember how much fuel I put in, nor did I check mileage with math (to many conversions). But the best mileage I have ever gotten in our Z was 27.2mpg on the computer during a road trip to QC. Mileage improved about 1-2mpg in Canada since they do use crap ethanol in their fuel. Simple math average fill ~17gal @ 27mpg = 459/tank. After fill ups our range was showing over 500 miles

It really depends, each car is different (fuel tank shape etc). The fuel pumps are pretty stout though. Pretty much what depoint said. All the people i worked with are picky people when it comes to cars. However they are automotive mechanics, some Master, or ASE certified. They always rag on people who keep their tank only a quarter tank full. But they are old school people. Cars are engineered with better knowledge than the older days

critical 09-11-2014 12:42 AM

the little computer says 18mpg. i never care about saving fuel. stupid thread. it's a Z.

Jimbo370 09-11-2014 08:41 AM

The intent of the thread is to recognize the function of your computer at the extreme point and to realize the optimum distance of your personal Z. Not that it says 18 mpg which varies. Don't read between the lines. there are a lot of people who shouldn't post before they think. BE nice is it that hard.

critical 09-11-2014 08:23 PM

the computer is pretty useless for determining distance till empty

Facts I do not care to know; might be depressing. I stopped looking at my avg. mpg a long time ago. I just count the dots. 4 dots means find a gas station.

I have gotten 1650 miles on one tank

UNKNOWN_370 09-13-2014 04:12 PM

I get 290mpt. The best I've seen is 380mpt and the worst is 212mpt

JARblue 09-13-2014 04:42 PM

I've gotten 520 miles on a tank before driving across West Texas. And I only filled up 18.8 gallons that time.

Normally I get around 300-350 miles on mostly city driving tanks, and around 400 miles on mostly highway driving tanks. It is rare that I fill up with less than 17 gallons. The mileage remaining indicator usually comes on saying ~50 miles left. Once it reaches "---", I can usually get another 50-75 miles without issue. The thing you have to realize is the miles remaining is based on recent driving habits. If you've been driving easy (say ~20 mpg avg) and then start gunning it everywhere once the 50 miles remaining warning comes on, then you probably won't even make it 25 miles before it starts flashing "---".

After 60K miles, I can pretty much drive the car within a 1/2 gallon of completely empty based on my mileage counter and knowing how hard/easy I've been driving the car and how much city/highway driving during that tank. I fill up when its convenient, knowing that when the car tells me I have 50 miles left, I can really drive over 100 miles if I'm on the highway or easy on the gas in the city. And no issues with my fuel pump so far. If I ever have an issue, I'll be sure to post it up along with a similar summary of my driving habits.

Also, DE knows his $hit. He wasn't being mean - just a little curt. Your initial post may have been English, but it certainly wasn't very clear.

JARblue 09-13-2014 04:45 PM

Actually, to be completely honest, I rarely look at the miles remaining indicator. I keep that display on the outside temp 99% of the time. I reset one or both of my mileage counters every time I fill up, so I just use that to judge when I need gas. Sometimes I'm prompted to get gas before I need it just because I get annoyed having to turn off the reminder every time I turn on the car when it thinks I have less than 50 miles remaining.

I was stuck on the highway in traffic when the last gas light indicator went off and lines appeared:icon14:
Was still able to go another 15miles to fill up:driving::bowrofl:

I've found the gauge not overly reliable, I've been caught a couple times now out of gas due to range left... now I just got by how many miles I've put on the tank. 600kms is about the max I will go, but I've done 725-750kms on a tank, hwy of course.

Hammtastic 09-23-2014 01:28 PM

It seems as though the computer figures Range by your recent driving style. When I drive it easy a while before filling up, I see the range from 450-500 miles. If I drive it hard for a while and then fill up, I've seen as low as 350 miles. For this reason, I don't trust it.

As far as fuel acting as a cooling agent for the pump, I don't know how true that is. In my experience, I've replaced fuel pumps that sit at the top of the tank. Not sure of the placement of the pump on the Z, so I can't be completely sure, but in other vehicles, fuel was not intended to help keep the fuel pump cool. Just my 2 cents.

Silly Rabbit 09-23-2014 04:10 PM

Am I missing something? My speedo and my tach have a clear piece of plastic in front of the gauge\display, but the computer\gas gauge doesn't. Just noticed that this weekend and wondered if it was supposed to be like that.

Motionmagic 09-23-2014 04:33 PM

^^ Yes, supposed to be like that.

I would rather that the digital display was analog or more advanced digital and blends in better. The rectangular display and silver color don't look right.

I'd also rather that the digital clock be for oil pressure and analog.

damian_mb 09-24-2014 01:34 PM

4 dots and I get gas.

Smashley 09-26-2014 03:16 PM

Now that the weather has cooled I went from 400-420 mpt to 360-390 mpt.

i'm the same. the lowest i let mine go is just about a 1/4 tank for starvation issues and also dirt in the bottom of the tank. i know newer systems and cleaner gas etc but it's still a concern lol
