370z MPG VS V8

I have been doing some searching on this forum on people's average MPG's, and it seems like the usual is anywhere between 21-24. This just seems strange because I see pictures/forums of people in cars like the V8 ford mustang's who can average up to 25 MPG on the freeway, and it has a bigger engine than the Z.

This just doesn't seem to make much sense. Does anyone have an explanation for this?

kenchan 07-21-2014 10:02 AM

does the cylinders shut down on the stang's v8 like on the vettes?

maybe that's how they're doing it? not sure.
i never really cared about mpg on my Z.

mcphelps 07-21-2014 10:10 AM

Why are you comparing average MPG of the 370z to the Highway MPG of the Mustang? Compare highway to highway. EPA MPG of 370Z is 19-26, 22 combined. Mustang V8 is 18-25, 20 combined. So it really doesn't get better mileage.

FPenvy 07-21-2014 10:13 AM

i drive mine hard and also in a bit of traffic daily. plus drag strip runs here and there and my avg. MPG is 19. that is amazing for the way i drive and also the fact that i am not on the highway that often.

I was just saying that it seems like most people average 24 ish on the HWY in their Z and some people with V8's get almost the same if not better.

Just an interesting observation I thought

DIGItonium 07-21-2014 10:20 AM

There are several factors such as drag, power to weight ratio, gearing, etc. With the V8, I'm assuming such cars benefit with taller gearing. Our cars have shorter gearing for faster acceleration, but it sacrifices a bit of mileage. I'm only speaking off the top of my head so don't quote me lol.

Anyhow, I'm pushing at least 450 whp and my average combined MPG is around 22. :)

Minsu 07-21-2014 10:21 AM

Lies i get 14.1mpg.

In my opinion, worrying about mpg when driving a sports car is sort of like worrying about rearranging the deck chairs as the Titanic is sinking. It is pointless.

Mt Tam I am 07-21-2014 10:27 AM

The modern V8 takes the MPG test well. I wonder if I could drive to get this type of result? Nope. Never.

Oh yeah.

Our car: ~2400rpm 6th gear @65mph
Stang GT500: ~1300rpm 6th gear @65mph
Vette: ~1400rpm 6th gear @65mph

My pop's C6 can get dang near 30mpg at a steady 65mph cruise (not that any of these cars are usually cruised at 65).

I think the 370 could use a taller 6th, it certainly has the torque.

Davey 07-21-2014 10:58 AM

I guess this happens because people buy V8 Mustangs and then putt down the highway in 6th gear at 55 mph getting 25 MPG. The Z definitely gets better mileage than a Mustang GT driven in a likewise manner.

FPenvy 07-21-2014 11:02 AM

i get 20mpg at 90 on the highway. i'm cool with that.

Huck 07-21-2014 11:03 AM

I have a lot of bolt ons so my car breathes easily. At 55 in 6th I get around 30mpg. On a straight flat road I got stuck behind a semi going 45, I drafted behind him for a bit and got 44.7 mpg. It helps to be UpRev tuned though lol.

Zdayz 2014!!

Gotta look good til the very end :icon17:

PS - I don't care about my MPG either. It is what it is.

Akurei 07-21-2014 11:19 AM

I gotta admit, for a v6, the 370z's gas mileage sucks. But for a 13 second car naturally aspirated, I suppose it's normal. :iagree:

Davey 07-21-2014 11:40 AM

I say if you're getting better than 23 mpg, you're driving the car wrong.

Zteve 07-21-2014 12:09 PM

wow, another " i get ##mpg" thread, oh joy :ugh2:

Gas mileage is a major concern with cars like the 370Z. The typical owner is looking for a frugal, practical little easy-to-park runabout that holds a lot of groceries. :ugh2:

aszyd 07-21-2014 12:18 PM

Direct Injection...

Ford makes good power and good MPG with their current engines because of DI. I would love to see what a DI 370 could put down. Plus, the gearing, as mentioned before.

The only time I calculated MPG in my '04 Cobra was when I filled up the first time. 18MPG... I could watch the fuel gauge drop on my daily commute. Easily 1/4 tank each way.

dotcomee 07-21-2014 12:23 PM

Maybe 2015 will finally bring us a hybrid 370Z. :stirthepot:

Mitco39 07-21-2014 12:31 PM

Ive actually found that the mileage goes up the faster you go on the Z. If anything it could benefit from a shorter set of gears. The car loves to go 90mph, above that it starts to drop off quite rapidly.

janglez 07-21-2014 12:38 PM

don't care what the mpg is...a viper only gets like 12/19 and i'd LOVE to have one...the z is not for economical driving...just my 2 cents...and no, i don't want change...LOL

Fuzzzy 07-21-2014 02:25 PM

Maybe I'm odd, but I've never been concerned about a vehicle's gas mileage, other than out of curiosity. If others are concerned, perhaps the guv'ment should require the manufacturers to disclose an approximation of what prospective buyer's should expect.

On the other hand, I have been concerned about the price of gas. But not enough to give me pause in buying a Z.

brancky3 07-21-2014 03:52 PM

I got 26 mpg driving to Atlanta, not bad at all. ~65-70mph the whole way

Good post. Personally, I prefer the shorter gearing for the Z as it's a mountain/twisties kind of car more so vs the other two. So giving up a few mpg's on the highway has never been a concern for me.

Wait a minute, I live on a frickin island.....what's a highway?? :icon17:

Munts 07-21-2014 05:42 PM

The point of this thread wasn't to worry about MPG..

I had an 04' S4 that only got around 16 MPG combined, and I loved every second of it.

I was just making an interesting observation how certain V8 cars manage to get the same if not better MPG than the Z. Simple as that.

I think you don't know us very well if you did not fully expect this thread to wander off into the hinterlands of non-sequitors and random observations.

You'll learn over time.

Yeah I guess I should have figured anything to do with MPG is a dangerous topic..

14ZTSport 07-21-2014 05:55 PM

As long as I didn't have to pay a 1500 gasoline consumption tax (as I saw on a GTO sticker back around 04-05), I'm good!

I just want to throw out there that when I had my Jeep Grand Cherokee it got better gas milage than its I6 twins on the highway. I attribute this to the V8 pulling the weight better on the highway. The thing is though at those times I was being very easy on the gas. It didn't take much of a lead foot to kill those numbers where as the I6 engines were pretty steady on their mpgs. Off road the I6 did a ton better. When I hear the Vette guys and stang guys talking about how good their milage is I am sure they are babing their cars to get that. Around town they suck gas. If they drive like me good luck seeing good milage in any situation.

NoLaKrewe 07-21-2014 06:15 PM

If you want MPGs buy a Piruis. If you want a beautiful car, fun to drive car buy a Z.
