This just doesn't seem to make much sense. Does anyone have an explanation for this?

Dude, the explanation is simple - compare apples with apples.

My Z34 6MT has life to date average fuel consumption of 10.7 litres per 100km, having covered 110,000 klms since May-2009

My "other" car, a Ford Falcon utility, running a 5.4-litre quad-cam engine with 6AT has life to date average fuel consumption of 17.8 litres/100km, having covered 120,000 klms since Dec 2007. The "ute" serves on weekend driving around duty as well as tow-beast for race car, so consumption will be increased because of tow-beast duty by (maybe) 10-15% given the amounting of towing I have done.

This is an accurate real-world comparison over two vehicles, both of which have covered over 100,000 klics.

So sad .... I too remember the days of miles and gallons, but they were real gallons, not those small things that pass for gallons in the US !!!!

MagmaRed370z 07-23-2014 10:25 AM

Just got back from a trip to Missouri and got 27.2 mpg on the interstate going 75 mph and with the air on.

dotcomee 07-23-2014 01:01 PM

More importantly, what is your GPM? Glances (at your Z) Per Mile?

Roddy1 07-23-2014 01:09 PM

19mpg on average. My bolted LSX DD gets 21 on average, only because the LSX was touched by the hands of god, or a god, I cant remember which right now.

Masterbeatty 07-23-2014 01:23 PM

I got 27.5 mpg @ 70 mph when driving from SoCal to NorCal on I-5. But around town I get about 17 ish. I get about 26 mpg @ 65 when I drive a hour for my autox events with all my crap-ola in the back and front seat. So extra weight plays a part too.

Hahaha once again.. I know i've said this before but the original reason of this post wasn't to start another mundane MPG thread or to complain about the Z's MPG.

When I previously owned my 2004 Nissan 350z I had a friend who owned a Ford mustang GT and we both lived near each other and did around the same amount of highway/city driving, and we almost averaged the same MPG.

mjg 07-23-2014 07:55 PM

So with the Z i went through a ton of gas, because I always loved to rev it out, and drive it aggressively. With my Shelby, i have really long gearing and really can't rev past 3000 without things getting too crazy... I'm guessing I'd get between 10-14 mpg in each car, the Z has a much larger tank though which i still really can't figure out.

Mpg what's s that?

Fizzer 07-24-2014 10:52 AM

Lets keep this OT party going! I got 6.5mpg at a track day a few weeks back. Yes I reset the trip computer for on track runs because racecar. 76mph avg @ Summit Point Main on RE-11s - not too shabby for first track day in the Z.

UNKNOWN_370 07-24-2014 11:23 AM

16.1mpg cuz I don't drive like a Mitch.

Montez 07-24-2014 12:50 PM

VQ's (3.0,3.5 3.7)s have never been that fuel efficient especially the 3.5 and 3.7. Having had 6 cars with it in them, it is what it is.

+1 also they are very reliable engine.

Munts 07-24-2014 05:05 PM

ALRIGHT EVERYONE.

POST YOUR AVERAGE CITY/HIGHWAY MPG and how it compares to the previous cars you've owned :rolleyes:

L33T Z34 07-25-2014 03:27 PM

Beleeve it or not, I got 22.25 MPG HIGHWAY on I-55 - STL to CHI n bak, ~575 miles w/4.36 final drive.
And this is calculated by the ole skool method, difference in mileage divided by gallons fueled, not the ECU guesstimate. LOL! The ECU stops displaying a range when ur close to empty anyway, how fok'n worthless nIssan!

zae757 07-25-2014 03:44 PM

Maybe it's just me but why buy a Z if you're worrying about the gas mileage. That's like complaining about the inability to rotate tires...

OP was not complaining about gas mileage, just made an observation and asked for an explanation.

Now onto his 2nd question. My prior car 04 G35 Coupe with auto trans, average 17, mostly city. Current Z is a 6mt with same type of driving, getting 16.5, was only about 15 until exhaust got changed.

Damn! Acceleration must be brutal.

Previous, lets see. Toyota Paseo, never calculated, but easily 30+. Tiny lightweight car, tiny 4 Cyl.

'99 Accord, 29 MPG.

'09 370z, 23 MPG

'04 Cobra, 16 MPG

'12 Focus, 33 MPG

'14 370z, 22.5 MPG, so says the gauge. I need a tune!

OK...read the post...sure....easy...

V8s make more torque than Nissan V6s...therefore, their gearing can be made for interstate driving to = or beat V6 gearing MPG...It's all in the tranny/final drive ratios...

Rwjohn6 07-26-2014 08:36 AM

I drove my 09 from NY to FL avg mph 73.4 avg mpg 28.4

Crypto2k 07-26-2014 08:50 AM

09 Sport with more than a few mods. I avg around 22 in town and on the highway was pushing 40mpg. That's if all hwy. As you can see my avg speed was ummm up there. Beats driving a Prius at any mpg.

My 05 Frontier Nismo gets 15.9 regardless. Same with 4wd or 2wd. Used to be 16.9 but got knocked slightly when I went to 17" wheels and BF Duratrack meaty tires. Still happy with that considering. Can't live in CO without a mountain/winter truck.

MagmaRed370z 07-26-2014 09:37 AM

I get 90+ mpg if I go downhill and in neutral lol.....

In all seriousness I get 21 city and 25ish highway.
