On older cars, where the shifter was mounted on the side of the transmission, you could get a lot of movement in the stick if you had drivetrain mounts that were sloppy or broken. IIRC, the Z shifter is in the middle of the trans so you may be able to feel the stick move up a little when in first. If it bothers you, I'd check the motor/trans/diff mounts.
