Default Tire blow out (I guess?)

Well, for some reason this happened to me today!

No sudden sound or anything. Just pulled out of a parking lot and started driving straight. I noticed my steering wheel was a tad off center and knew something wasn't right. Pulled over right away and this is what I found.

305/30 RE-11s on a 19x10.5 rim

Tire pressure has been normal the past month, thought maybe it has been slowly tearing itself apart for a while and gave in today. Only around 16k miles on them. No track days or spinning tires/ silly drift days. Just daily driven. The tires look like crap in the pictures probably because I live right next to the bare reservation and there is always tons of dust storms rolling through my neighborhood. That is probably why the sidewalls look crap

I originally bought them to track my car on the weekends but ended up never getting into it. So the main reason i'm posting is to ask about some tire recommendations that aren't overkill for an N/A Z. I tried searching around some but wanted to see what people are running right now and if they like them. I live in Arizona so i'm obviously looking for a summer tire that can take some rain here and there but just a few levels down performance wise from the RE-11 so I can have some better tread life.

Man that's ghetto and scary... At least you're safe!

Maybe go to the place you bought them? And check the date code?

Lastly, the new hit tire is Bridgestone Potenza S04s

I'll be hitting up the discount tire I got them from tomorrow! Of course I got the warranty so that's not a problem :P Yeah I should check the date code, glad it didn't happen on the freeway.. Didn't wreck my rim either!

Thanks, I'll check that tire out.

I went thru the same exact damage a couple of weeks ago.

I decided to not spend the extra money and went with S-04's.

My RE-11's we're a couple of years old with less than 5k before one let go.

Im just happy it didn't let go on the freeway as I was a block away from home.

That is catastrophic sidewall failure in2 locations approx 180 degrees apart.

If the rim is not damaged (i.e: still round) then it was not as a consequence of an impact - a hit significant enough to damage the sidewall will show up as rim damage and I cannot see that in the photo, but tyre shop should check

It is the inner bead/sidewall and we've seen Dunlop R-Spec failures here in AU but only after severe abuse (RH Front at Philip Island T12 cops a huge beating - long corner, high speed and tyre fully loaded caused an overheat and sidewall casing failure), so given that you;ve not tracked the car, and it is DD use only, it "could" be caused by alignment issues, but I'd rule that out by what I can see of the tread.

That leaves defective construction and a warranty claim .. be interested in the outcome given that RE11 is on my "to try" list

Oh wow that is interesting. Hmmm. Mine are a little over a year and a half old. I wonder if the age kills them quickly because you only had 5k!

Yeah my tread wore fine throughout the use of them and no bent rim so theres no way it came from an impact (and I might remember ramming into a curb or something hah!). I really liked them but since I never pushed them I couldn't justify the price tag. I did upgrade from the base model rims to these 19s so i'm not sure if that changes the alignment at all compared to a sports package with the 19s. I've had a slight camber but I just figured that was normal from looking at some pictures of some other Zs

I had no issues with the OEM Bridgestone's, but after I picked up some shrapnel I had to get new rears - went with the S04's all around. So far I haven't had any issues with them.

However, this makes me want to go inspect my tires now.

been running S04's for a few years now since they were released (3yrs?). no issue on my sets.

usually those failures on the inner tread is from excess camber + low psi.

I caught mine before it did that on one of my previous stock michelin tires on an Acura.

Basically the inside side walls had long cracks going around the perimiter of the circumference. The tire shop said I should show Michelin and make a claim but I figured the time I would not bother.

Just got back from discount tire. Obviously had no problem with the warranty. Just bought a new set of S-04s with one of the rears for free. I was going to buy new tires within the month anyways so I guess it works out...hah

Not really sure if I should take any other action.

Default Discount Tire!

Discount has always done right by me! Local, priced right, clean courteous . I had a set of good years, that were hydroplaning, and even after 5000 miles, I got a new set of Michelins at no charge. They even re-torqued my spacers and wheels at no charge. (It was not a busy day.)
Cheers
