Launching techniques for 6MT anyone?
for example edmunds would rev up to 4500 rpm and let out the clutch quickly.
I am not sure if they are flooring it from the start. and im sure that is not good for the clutch. any other way to launch the car and get a good time in the 1/4 mile? |
I've found that revving to 3000-3500 RPM and then quickly releasing the clutch and planting the throttle to the floor gets very fast starts, a bit of tire squeal, and no detrimental wheel spin. It really doesn't feel all that stressful on the car either. Nothing like the Porsche Carerra PDK wheel hopping starts I've read about. 4500 RPM sounds like too much.

when i launched mine on a test run on a back alley, i also found that 3k is a good rpm to quickly release the clutch. 4.5k might cause unnecessary wheel spin. |
4500 is WAY too high

There is no perfect rpm. So much depends on the road surface.
But there seems to be a consensus that somewhere between 3,000 to 4,500 is best. When I launch at an autocross I usually let the clutch in quickly around 3,500 and find my self way too fast for the first gate:icon17: |
Every track will have different conditions but for me, 2500 RPM seemed a bit low (never got any wheelspin). But 3000 RPM would cause some wheel spin if I wasn't careful enough. Practice makes perfect.

^^ practice makes perfect.

3k, tried and tested by yours truly, seems to launch great on any surface.
|
^^ exactly my point. 3k seems to be the hot spot!

thanks for the tips
so basically 3k rpm and dump the clutch quickly right? |

This all works wonderful until you decide to run some DR's btw :-p |
let out quickly to the engage point, dont just dump it. Once you get to about 7k, kick the clutch, pull the stick back hard through neutral into 2nd, release clutch to engage point, back on the throttle simultaneously, and repeat as desired. Im a drag star, so this technique will help some, along, of course, with practice.

Tried launching the car twice today. Both times, at around 3500 rpm or so clutch dump, got NASTY wheel hopping, car vibrating and shaking violently. I backed off quickly both times. couldnt get tire squeal or peel out, just lots of wheel hop. Anyone else experience this?

Make sure you turn off VDC first...
