Question about Emissions with mods..
So the Z is the first car of mine that I plan to do any modifying to. But I want to make sure that I can still pass emissions properly in New York. Right now the main thing I'm wondering is if HFC's will pass emissions on NY? I plan on going cbe and intake but im on the fence right now about hfc because I don't have experience with what mods can be done and still pass emissions.
If anyone could shed some light for me as far as emissions (specifically hfc) for New York that would be great! |

Most states these days just plug a computer into your car to check for CELs and other flags. If you haven't triggered a CEL, my understanding is that you'd be fine.
Now if they go old school and put a tester wand in your exhaust...cross your fingers perhaps. |

I am actually good friends with my mechanic and I believe I have seen him use the sniffer in the exhaust. I'm assuming just for his own satisfaction to make sure everything is running right with the cars he is working on. But, I would never ask him to do anything that could put his shop in jeopardy.
So what you're saying is.. HFC's will fail the sniffer test? If so..If I were to just swap the exhaust and intake I assume I'd be fine to pass the sniffer as long as my stock cats are on.. Right now I was just checking out the Berk website.. and on their HFC it says..OBDII & 49 state compliant. So is that suggesting that they will pass emissions just as good as stock cats? In NY, here is how it works if your car is OBDII equipped. They plug a diagnostic computer in, if you've thrown a CEL recently, you lose. If you have not, you win. That simple. This car is a new one so it's OBDII equipped, hence if you get HFCs like Berk or FIs or whatever, and aren't throwing CELs you'll be fine.

you won't even need to, Berks and the FI HFC have a good record of not throwing CELs. If you do throw one.. just clear it, run the car for 300 miles then have it tested.. you'll be good.
Edit: to clear it you just disconnect the battery for like 15 minutes.. The CEL can't be thrown within a certain amount of miles, so you can't just clear it and then show up. Last edited by Togo; 09-13-2009 at 08:25 PM. |

Thanks, Ive been checking out the FI exhaust and I'm trying to decide whether or not its worth getting HFC to go with it.. It only seems to be an extra few hp and tq over the stock cats.. And idk if I care to be bothered with any chance of inspection problems for numbers I might not even see..

In all honesty you're not likely to have inspection problems with a HFC and CBE setup in NY, but you should do whatever you feel most comfortable with.
The FI exhaust seems to be a favorite here among the masses and is a great choice plus the customer service has been nothing but exceptional for everyone. |
