I almost forgot about the manual transmission, it was AWFUL. There are economy cars with better shifters out there than the Gen coupe. I told the salesman that, he refuted it, I told him to go next door to Mazda with me... he declined. Otherwise, interior is much nicer than the Z or 370 IMO

As for koreans and over rating their horsepower numbers, I agree. Their numbers are more reflective of Dog Power. (jokes aside, the gen coupe has some serious Jam).

+1 on the heritage of the 370Z

Yeah, I mean I was merely going by what they put out on their phones etc. They seem to think Americans love the bigger numbers. Well I guess that part might be true to some extent.

I hadn't looked at the interior of the Gen Coupe since 2010 when I looked at both vehicles before buying, but based on the description OP gave I was like damn, I should check it out. While it looks nice, it doesn't seem like the superlatives used were quite warranted lol. I went to the photos expecting to be looking at an Audi S5 interior based on the description, and Hyundai just isn't quite there ;)
Looks like basically all the same creature comforts of a Touring Z, for less $. Still nice, don't get me wrong.

Well ive only had it a week and have had the flu, havent really gotten into yet so I cant really say. However, even with 348 HP it is slower than the 370. Its a HEAVY car.

Aftermarket, I would say the Gen is easier to mod and cheaper to mod. They have many tune options available, also the canned ones work well too.

370 stock is 0-60 4.7 and 1/4 mile 13.3 (from what I have read)
2013+ Genesis 3.8 0-60 is 4.8 and 1/4mile 13.5 (from what I have read)

*And yes the hyundai resale value was a determining factor in not buying one for me. Plus, its a Hyundai....

this was exactly the reasoning for me too and bought the 370. After ten months I got tired of it and kept thinking back to that 3.8 interior.

I like the 13 updated interior of Gen coupe but I guess it is personal preference but interior still seems cheaper than Z. Just closing the door, Z is more sturdy.

I still like them though. Plus your right that 3.8 sounds boss.

Roddy1 04-30-2014 10:42 AM

My Z is a dedicated summer car. I couldn't justify a Gen Coupe as a dedicated summer car. Similar cars, but differently leagues once you look into it.

OP check out the SOLO exhaust for the 3.8 Coupe. Sounds great. Persoanlly if I bought the Gen coupe I would do K&N drop ins (factory intake is very good, some people dyno zero gains or losses with aftermarket intakes on the 3.8) delete the secondary cats, and throw a canned tune on it. Should Scoot the same or faster than a stock 370 for about $600 in mods.

IMO, which is about as valuable as a wooden nickel, even the most optioned Z seemed a cheaper interior. The interior was the second most important for choosing this car. Keeping my budget in low 30's, I felt this car was the best fit for me. Again, IMO, a much better interior, all the tech you can want, all supple tan leather and most importantly the ride. It just so comfortable. Granted, not as fast a the Z but its still got some guts to it.

I dunno, i know my Z felt solid like you said but this thing is a tank. It definitely has that "thud" closing the door, nothing cheap feel about it.

I agree, they are in different leagues. The Z being a dedicated sports car, thru and thru. And it does it VERY well. Its why I bought the damn thing. The GC is a GT for sure. At this point in my life without breaking the bank, Im in comfort/sport mode. Maybe in a year, two, etc, Ill get back into Sport. I have a feeling Im going to be missing rowing my gears soon. lol.

I must look into this tune you speak of. Thanks!!!

Wow looks amazing. Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 just made my potential next sports car short list !

Firebase99 04-30-2014 02:06 PM

Yea, I know, thank you and the bang for the buck is astonishing. Again, not quite as fast but Im happily giving a bit of that up for the great ride, all the toys and really comfy seats and something very nice to look at for my commutes. Plus, its still plenty fast.

kenchan 04-30-2014 02:10 PM

kinda reminds me of the ms3. the seats look good.

Firebase99 04-30-2014 02:25 PM

Im not a huge fan of the exterior though. i dont HATE it but I dont turn around to look at the car like I used to when i parked my Z's.

b15 04-30-2014 02:33 PM

You'll be back soon! :D

Enjoy the car. I personally shopped these as well. I couldn't get over the styling. The interior of the Gen Coupe was OK, but I didn't think it was as nice as my Z or the G37. Seemed like it was trying too hard to look upscale and had the opposite effect.

Knowing me and cars, especially Z's, considering a Turbo S isn't in the cards, you're probably right.

See IMO the GC is BETTER than the G37 interior. Rides better and tad but quicker too. I don't think Hyundai tried to hard to make it look upscale, I think they nailed it. If anything I don't think nissan tried hard enough with the G interior. I did some serious cross shopping of the two. Again, opinions, we all know what they are like. Lol. Different strokes for different folks.

Firebase99 04-30-2014 03:40 PM

Edit: if my finances continue to be good (knock on wood) I'm already scouting used GTR. Hell of a job convincing the wife on that one. Lol.

Yep. To be fair, the GC was just updated, and the G coupe is riding the same interior from 2008 (Stupid complacent Nissan), which compared to a pre 2013 GC was leagues better. All here say anyhow, to each his own! As long as you're happy!

I'm always scouting a GTR haha. I would like to own both, but wife would KILL me. :icon17:

I keep wanting to jump in here but I will leave it at this. I test drove a Gen Coupe 3.8 then a G37 IPL and bought the IPL. Would I do the same now? Without a second thought.

Tazicon 04-30-2014 04:46 PM

I should also state that I am not a fan of Hyundai, but I did give it the benefit of the doubt and at least gave it a good test drive.

I was looking to keep it under $35k, so the IPL was out. The fact we are comparing a GC to an IPL says something IMO. Unless the IPL interior was different from the G37 I still give the GC the nod.

Really? Even '13+? I agree about the 12's and down but Hyundai really stepped up on the interior in '13+? Performance, sure, IPL probably has it beat but bang for buck and stuff?

I agree. The Genesis is nice but it doesn't have the quality feel of my 08 G37 or my wifes 13 Z Touring. That said, the Genesis is a nice car. I came real close to buying one myself. OP enjoy your car and:gtfo2:

Iam on the z forum...lol. I disagree in all areas and I just sold my '13 z. Lol. Each his own. The GC RSPEC and track models are better suited to combat the z in performance, yet noticeably slower, albeit, not by much but it's evident. The model I got is the "luxury" Grand Touring Model. Still fast but it's got the 8 speed auto (like butter) with paddles, which are better than the BMW 335 IMO(drive that too). Again slower than the Track and Rspec but plenty of gitty up.

You're a good sport, and I admire your willingness to support your position no matter what. I'll give you one area where the Genesis beats hell out of the Z and the G, and that's the stock exhaust. I put a Nismo exhaust on her car, and it could still stand to be more aggresive. After I do something about my car, I might put Tanabe axle backs on hers. Enjoy your car dude:tup:

haha, thanks. Lol, I LOVE the Z, always will. I actually like it better than the GC JUST not for my wants and needs right now. It is a better SPORTS car, hands down. Better build? Maybe. Better value? Arguable, and a no (IMO) when it comes to price vs amenities. More than likely, my wife will prove herself right and when the Z35 comes out, Ill sell this and get the Z.
