My 17 year old son just asked to take my car to prom

I said yes but feel sick to my stomach about it. It's going to be a long two and a half weeks until this is over!

I would never loan my car to someone I didn't trust to treat it the same way I do.

if he ever wants to drive the car ever again, this opportunity should convince him not to drink and drive on prom night.

I would give this opportunity to my son in a heart beat, he would remember it forever.

I would just make sure that he drives it before the big night so that he is comfortable with the car when he goes on his own.

Boy, I would have told him to want in one hand & crap in the other & let me know which one fills up first.
Personally I think this is a bad move in so many ways & it's not about the car not being replaceable, sometimes bad decisions are made without ever knowing how bad they are

Good luck to all involved

Definitely make sure you get him comfortable with the car & hopefully he will act responsible

He is a great kid and student (unlike me) so I couldn't say no. I don't have to worry about this one drinking, we leave him home for weekend all the time and have never had one problem and I have neighbors that keep an eye on him. Since the car is supercharged I have a tune on it just in case this happened (4000 rpm and 60 mph) but it's still my car with a kid driving it. I need another drink!

You sound like a good father. I understand your anxiety...I remember the first time I let my son take my Harley. I'll bet your son doesn't let you down on this.

Op, it seems like you trust your son very much. Why put a limiter on it at all then?

Do you plan to crash your car today? Then why have insurance on it? When the car gets into boost it can be a handful and going from a 4 cylinder Altima he is used to hitting the gas petal a lot more so I don't want him getting into boost even if he doesn't intend to. Plus knowing it's there I don't have to worry about anyone trying to get him to race since he knows he would have no chance. Trusting him and turning him loose with something that could make him not ever come home again are two different things in my book.

Ask the parents who have needlessly lost their child in a senseless fatal car crash and they'll say that their kids were great too. The operative word here is "kids" and that's what they are. I would let my kid borrow the family car but not a sports car with the power a Z has. Waaaay too much temptation! Their friends will have much more say in the decisions he makes no matter how wonderful your kid is and what they have been preached about at home. The very fact that you have brought this up in the forum makes me think that you too do not feel it's a good idea. Sorry, but you don't get my ok on this and if I were you, I would tell him that you have changed your mind. Better to have him disappointed then having an senseless tragedy that no "drink" can ever numb you. It may be the best decision you ever made. Good luck!

Go back and read this thread, I have stated over and over that I have a tune on it that wont let him go over 4,000 rpm or 60 mph. Your family car wont do over 60? My car is fast but it's all in the high rmps, he can go much faster in him Altima than with the valet tune on my Z but thanks for the happy thoughts!
