I don't have to worry about this one drinking, we leave him home for weekend all the time and have never had one problem and I have neighbors that keep an eye on him. Since the car is supercharged I have a tune on it just in case this happened (4000 rpm and 60 mph) but it's still my car with a kid driving it. I need another drink!
Ask the parents who have needlessly lost their child in a senseless fatal car crash and they'll say that their kids were great too. The operative word here is "kids" and that's what they are. I would let my kid borrow the family car but not a sports car with the power a Z has. Waaaay too much temptation! Their friends will have much more say in the decisions he makes no matter how wonderful your kid is and what they have been preached about at home. The very fact that you have brought this up in the forum makes me think that you too do not feel it's a good idea. Sorry, but you don't get my ok on this and if I were you, I would tell him that you have changed your mind. Better to have him disappointed then having an senseless tragedy that no "drink" can ever numb you. It may be the best decision you ever made. Good luck!

Go back and read this thread, I have stated over and over that I have a tune on it that wont let him go over 4,000 rpm or 60 mph. Your family car wont do over 60? My car is fast but it's all in the high rmps, he can go much faster in him Altima than with the valet tune on my Z but thanks for the happy thoughts!

Um, I'm totally real. Not every kid is a maniac on the road. And if he respects his dad, he'll take care of the wheels. Can't go through life always assuming the worst.

Dad gave me the keys to his '90 Z32-TT many times when I went on dates. It was fun. Honestly, my dates never cared. However, I used to take my '87 200SX out. I stopped hearing from one girl after a short night out. A different girl bailed on me after she dropped me off after classes to get my car so we could meet up for lunch. Then came the 350Z and 370Z.... well it's still not good enough because it's not a luxury car or the girls would look down on me for driving a sports car. Tough crowd. O_o

Tell your son to have fun. You know him better than all of us. I took care of my dad's car the best I could whenever I had the keys to it.

First off, I never heard of being able to tune it to a lower rpm but I'm no mechanic so I'm sorry I missed that thread. Then if you're not concerned about getting dings from other kids car doors, then I hope your son enjoys the experience. Note that I am one of the "older" folks on this forum and have raised kids and am now a grandpa so you can see where I'm coming from! Anyway, you sound like a great dad and for that I......

No you're right, not every kid is a maniac but if you remember when you were that age, even the most level headed and seemingly mature kids will give in to peer pressure. Anyway, the OP has said he tuned down the car so it sounds safe to me. I wish his son nothing but a safe and enjoyable prom.

TBH, I knew "kids" that were more responsible in high school than many of the adults I know now

You don't have to be a "goody two shoes" to have respect for other people and their property.

Especially your own father and his property. I drove my fathers car to prom and failure was not an option for me. I would still carry the shame had I totalled or damaged it.

I assume your children did not drive your car to prom.

I feel blessed my father rasied me to the point he could trust me with his car even against door dings. Not every parent can raise a responsible child. Perhaps their best decision ever made would be to not have children. I do not think the OP falls into this category.
