Spend the same amount of money honda owners spent on a muscle car or rwd tuner and compare

I remember watching the show a few years back on spike. They had a huge car meet, over 500 cars attended. A huge portion were civics, either hatches, coupes and/or sedans. One thing that stood out to me was one guy that spent over 25k on his motor. 25k and it was around 330hp.

Duc_Z09 04-02-2014 04:31 PM

Here's what I don't get... If you're going to spend money modding a car, why start with a POS econo-box grocery getter? Spend all you want on a Civic and at the end of the day it's still a ^%& Civic.:ugh2:

kenchan 04-02-2014 04:36 PM

civic has a long history and fans of many sorts. i suppose to them it's a special car.

i think the car looks okay. kinda not sure how torque steer's going to play...:ugh: at least if it was AWD..

i like the comments though... like these dreamers can really buy these cars anyway in volumes where american honda would be interested in spending the money to get it approved for the us market.

i think i read somewhere like $30K-35K for something like that... who the hell in the right mind would pay $35K for that in the US? A VERY small niche market.

thats the problem with civics in the us. the buyers are too cheap.

coolvans1988 04-02-2014 05:02 PM

I drove my mom's 99 Civic for a month while my 370z was in the shop.
Only impressed by saving money on gas. lol

Drakonis GTR 04-02-2014 05:13 PM

The concept of a Civic being a sleeper car is true, but somewhat flawed. Yes, if you dump enough money into it it can turn what was arguably one of the most boring cars into a quick, fun little car to zip around in. But to get a Civic to the point where it can take on a "big boy" and outrun it, the amount of money you would have to spend is ridiculous. For that same amount of money, you could buy a faster car and mod that. Never understood the point myself.

Now if we want to talk sleepers, I think AMC Gremlins still have access to that title. An ugly POS that most people didn't like and wouldn't even look at, but with just enough room to fit a big block V8 and the drive train to match. The 70's equivalent to getting passed by Honda Element.

Looks like it lost it's simplicity, which was always the big appeal to Honda's in the first place. At least the type R model.

very true. honda's slogan use to be 'honda, we make it simple.' :D

This never happens to me. I think I'm too old.

tr0n 04-02-2014 07:09 PM

not a honda, but a chevy cobalt tried to race me... it sounded so bad with a fart can that i couldn't help but laugh

DirtyDan 04-02-2014 08:17 PM

I was on my way home, a newer accord pull up next to me do the same thing. For crying out load, no I don't want to race you and your crappy car.

Amj2020 04-02-2014 10:41 PM

Today I was in my DD a 07 Prius and I pulled up next to a Black Ferrari 458. I know he was thinking "this dude wants to race" but did not want to lose to a hybrid so he backed down

zilverbullet 04-02-2014 11:02 PM

I had a ups driver rev at me at the stoplight. I thought of all those packages his ppl drop off at my door and gave him a thumbs up

critical 04-02-2014 11:10 PM

hondas are the only ones that want to race me

Vipers, Ferraris, etc. back then were only breaking 12s...if you look at it relatively.

I'd feel embarrassed if a Honda at least kept up with me in a 370Z.

Meh, unimpressed. Dump enough money into a lawn mower and itll go like an F1 car. Reminds me of this Dbag guy I used to know when I had old my 350. The 350 was new back then, stylish, cool and very handsome. He had this 98 civic or something, he said it ran low 12's. The thing was gutted!! He had a lawn chair for the single seat, no carpet, wires hanging everywhere. What a **** box. Yes, it blew the doors off my 350, but the point is I have doors.

with a little imagination and money your Civic can be anything you like.

1st of all, lemme clear things up since some of you are ignorant about me and my stance on Hondas; many of you are flat out IGNORANT about Hondas. I don't wanna call you "stupid" for the sake of civil debate. Anyways, I got into the Honda/JDM scene when it was novel, esoteric....before it got "ubiquitous" or riced-out.

2nd, I caught the Honda wave right before its culmination (people building 600+ hp *on dyno* FWD Hondas pulling 9's with 140+ trap speeds) and eventual fall. This was around the late 90s. Sure, these were trailer queens that had slicks up front, stripped down its bare metal chassis, broke down after a pass, etc....But it did inspire lots of people to try to build streetable Hondas that were quick.

3rd, to say that Hondas can't have a "sleeper" status is wrong. To only claim that domestic muscle cars were the only ones designated for this, is very narrow minded. I remember, prior to the Honda/JDM craze, people used to build old school VW Beetles with their "1835 cc" motors keeping up with, if not beating, domestic V8s....Is VW not an import sleeper?...absolutely. As a matter of fact, they're the original "import craze" prior to the Honda/JDM scene. They're "cheap Porsches"...RWD, rear engine, lightweight...can be made to be really fast (if you know what you're doing).

4th, it's obvious pretty much all of you look down on the Honda thing, because it's gaudy, passé and riced out now for the most part. You just haven't come across the fast Hondas that are tastefully modded. Look at "Honda Tuning" magazine if you wanna see examples.

Lastly, I owned a 370Z. I would rather drive that than a Honda (even if it is faster in the straights)....because I'm not 20 something y.o. anymore. It's a maturity thing. My point is, Hondas (all motor, streetable) got lots of potential. You can spin it whatever way you want...But yeah, lots of immature kids drive them now, and I can understand the disdain for Honda drivers; I'm not one of these douchebags.

You don't get to get your panties in a bunch. You came in here with a street racing story about your mad tyte straight piped civic hatch that ran a blistering mid to high 13. News flash, it was still rice in 2000. :rofl2:

don't worry, just a few more rpm's until the vtech kicks in.

Reminds me of that video where some dude in a 95ish eclipse gsx tc races against an M3. Well the M3 didn't even bother but once the eclipse launched and shifted into second, his motor blew. Parts of the connecting rod were found on top of the motor once he popped the hood. :eekdance:

Honda makes a decent lawnmower. I mean it is nothing more than a rebadged Chinese-made Craftsman but still, it cuts grass.

I honestly think Honda engineering and innovation out performs Nissan and just about any other automotive company. I'm not saying Honda makes faster cars or better looking cars than Nissan but their level of achievements and practicality is beyond measure. They make everything from cars to motorcycles to boats to jet planes to household items.

And to say that Honda sucks based on riced out civic on the road is just pure ignorant. They even make one of the best F-1 engines. They touched upon things that Nissan never even dreamed of.
