Mustang Vs. Z... they are really two different classes of cars so you really can't compare them.
Though it is interesting how similar the 3.7L V6 feels to the Mustang GT's 4.6L V8. They are very similar in power delivery and the 4.6L isn't a particularly torquey V8 at low RPMs, so it needs to be kept wound up. Aside from the Z revving higher the two engines feel eerily similar!

this a probably a stupid question as I don't like mustangs so I have not really done any research on them (I just know not to try and race one as I will get smoked) but the new GT500 is the replacement of Shebly's cobra versions from years previous? I saw a grey one yesterday for the first time in san diego at Oggis pizza and the owner got mad at me for taking pics of with my phone lol. its looks pretty cool in person

In the end, most people dont realize the Z isnt bred to be a 1/4 mile beast like a big V8. We are a maxed out V6 while the Mustang is an "underpowered" V8. By underpowered I mean they arent maxed out of the factory and are actually seeing less power than they are capable of stock. Simple mods like bolt ons will have MUCH more response to the cars unlike ours. However, throw me on a road course against one and it will be a massacre. Sports cars IMO are a balanced car, not built for one thing. Last edited by blue660r01; 09-04-2009 at 01:28 AM. |

The real problem is you never know what you're up against.
It's like any modded car, really. When you have exhaust on the car it's going to SOUND fast, regardless of whether it actually is or not. Some GT's will sound really mean but end up only having mufflers. Others might have a **** ton of other stuff to back up the sound, so you never know. My Mustang... you'd never guess that it pulled 1.9 second 60's all day long on stock tires and could rip just about anything out of the hole. It looked stock and my Magnaflows with o/r X-pipe had a very tame idle. You'll know when you run 'em if they are stout or not. Usually when you see the front wheels lift off the ground on the launch you kind of get the idea that you're f***ed. This one is a classic:

Oh yeah, the V6's are absolute weak sauce. They are just there for the bottom line.

You got pics of your stang? My roomate has basically full bolt ons and pulleys, FR500 wheels, 285 rear I believe. Just got DRs. Last dyno was I believe 311whp. The H pipe sounds ******* INSANE on these cars! |

All I've got is this video .
As I said in another thread I owned my Mustang a few hard drives ago and lost a lot of the pics. I'll have to dig through and see if I can find any saved. Anyways, with nothing but a 4.10 gear I ran a 13.5 at only 101 with a 1.997 60'. Very low MPH for that ET, so you can see where all the time came from. I couldn't beat an LS1 in a 1/4 drag but I had a pretty good shot edging them out in the 1/8th. It was always interesting making a pass against a big power car that ran say a 13.4 @ 107. I'd rip out of the hole and then they'd eat me up past the 1000'. With later mods I probably got the car down to the 13.1 @ 104 territory but never got it back to the 1/4. Just comparing it to the Z, my Mustang was much quicker 0-60 and the Z is a lot faster on top end. The 99-04 Mustangs lacked the power to be real top-end monsters without boost. The 05+ are a different story, though. They are a lot more able to lay down the high traps along with the low ETs. And when the 400+bhp 5.0 liter variation of the current 4.6 rolls around... hello!

If you want street performance aka the fun with torque and for 1/4 mile this car honestly is hard to beat. You want to take a car to a track for some twistys, then the Z will be the best. 2 different realms, both cars are above average comparatively with other stock cars. |
