Default Need suggestions on synthetic oil!!!

Hey guys my car is due for service and I am trying to figure out if I should take it to the dealer or if I should put another oil that will be better for my car.

From what I have read 5W30 Amsoil, Royal Purple, and Red Line are good choices. I was starting to get convinced on Amsoil but then I read that someone posted that it is not an ester based oil (is this true?).

I also read that someone claimed if you dont use Nissan's ester oil the mpg and the horsepower of your engine will decrease. I would like something that would affect mpg and horsepower in a good way or not affect it at all. Also, I want something that will improve performance. I live in California so the weather is almost always hot and I dont do anything crazy driving like dragging or taking my car to the track. The most I do is some aggressive driving on the highway but still I wouldnt mind spending extra money on better oil for my car.

Also, please suggest what oil filter to use! Thanks a lot guys!

There are a ton of posts in the forums about this. Just use the search feature or google what you want to know then add "the370z.com" after it in the search box. I'll give a link to one that I have found using the google method.

DIY: Nissan 370Z Oil change (AK370Z way) Pictures inside

I know this is a DIY but there is a lot of good info to answer your questions after the pictures.

Hope this helps.

Dealership will empty your pocket for a synthetic oil change. If you really can't change the oil at home, have a local auto shop change it for you but you should provide them with your choice of oil.

My personal favorite is Mobile 1 synthetic. $25 bucks for 5 quarts at walmart.

I get free oil changes for 3 years from my dealership, they use Mobil 1. I guess I'm lucky.

No **** they will!
I was feeling lazy one day and had them use their stuff, and it was more than what my Z06 cost me for an oil-change with 10.5 quarts of synthetic at the dealer! UNREAL!

Yup. It's very easy to overthink engine oil. It's not magic. The quality difference between any of the major brand synthetic oils is negligible. Not true of filters, however. With filters, you have to be a little careful. Best appear to be Wix, K&N, AC Delco. Reportedly, the Nissan filter isn't bad, although pricey for what you get.

That's a full 40 degrees. I find that VERY difficult to believe. I ran Redline and Mobil 1, and could not tell a difference at all between the two on my oil-temp gauge, FWIW.

Hrmmm. I never saw 240*F. I think the hottest I got mine was about 220-230*F flogging on it in 100*F weather. That's a pretty crazy difference, though, even if it is only half of what you originally stated.

Way too many myths about engine oil. When people come to the realization that there is no best oil, it makes it a lot easier to decide and that decision is usually based on price, dino or synthetic. I have yet to see any documented evidence that blames engine failure on the quality of an oil. There are other reasons why engines fail. I use synthetic, SAE 5W-30 and buy whatever brand is on sale at the time I need to change the oil. I'm not particular about oil filter types either. I have never lost an engine resulting from the quality of the oil or filter. My $.02.

Use a full synthetic of the appropriate weight. Use a quality filter. Did we really need oil thread #423,672?
