z wont start

so I go out to my car and get in and the car doesnt read that the key is with me I think. Even though the door handle button works to unlock the car. I just now replaced the battery and nothing changed. The fobgina doesnt do anything. The car just acts like the key isnt there meaning it does nothing. Im trapped at work, any ideas?

7speed 02-05-2014 08:19 PM

Steering lock probably. There is a recall on it since earlier last year so shouldn't be any charge to get replaced by Nissan.

KaienZ34 02-05-2014 08:25 PM

Did you put the key fob in the slot and try starting it?

snowhite370 02-05-2014 09:14 PM

Steering lock. Recalled by nissan. Had mine towed to the dealer cuz i didnt heed the warning and replace it before it happened :shakes head:

maizenblue 02-05-2014 09:15 PM

Damn. Guess im getting the day off tomorrow to have it towed

Sorry dude :/ that sucks. Shouldnt cost anything to replace it though!

maizenblue 02-05-2014 09:19 PM

So frustrating though. I saw on the sticky that the accessory power still turns on when you push the button though but mine doesnt. just stays on lock

maizenblue 02-05-2014 09:32 PM

Wow this sucks. Of course it leaves me stranded 40 miles from home

:iagree:

maizenblue 02-06-2014 01:33 PM

So im having it towed to the dealership, the guy here is already saying not all Zs are included under the recall. I have a 2010, so are they already trying to weasel themselves out of covering me. I guess something else could be wrong since it hasnt been checked yet but it definately seems like the steering lock. But is there any reason my Z shouldnt be covered by the recall

maizenblue 02-06-2014 02:15 PM

Ok they are saying my vin number doesnt fall into the recall and it wont be covered. What the hell

kenchan 02-06-2014 02:20 PM

bang on the steering lock with a small hammer or mallet and push the start button to see if you can free it. then cut the brown wire or pull the fuse while the car is in the ON position.

check my diy to see wat the thing looks like.

kenchan 02-06-2014 02:21 PM

dont want the op banging on his washer fluid bottle or something, you now. :icon17: :ugh:

Mitco39 02-06-2014 02:24 PM

you can call up nissan consumer affairs and see if they can reimbuse you for the work. they should. the same damn lock is used. even the recalled lock will eventually fail unless you do the brown wire cut or fuse pull.

maizenblue 02-06-2014 03:10 PM

The guy just said it is the jf00D or something. And itll be 1100 to fix. ****, im a 21 year old living paycheck to paycheck. Im literally going to be overdrawing my bank by the end of the month with my bills. Fml

Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk

kenchan 02-06-2014 03:12 PM

there should be a JF00E out by now... but the recall does call out JF00D.
i cracked up when i saw that thinking it looked like j-food (teriyaki or something :icon17: )

my car came with JF00B, JF00C is in there right now, working JF00B in the trunk for backup. :p

btw, call DE. he has all the answers.

Mitco39 02-06-2014 03:23 PM

DE seems like someone who would walk into the dealership buttass naked to make a point. lol

But yes if anyone can help you out its him :)

maizenblue 02-06-2014 06:43 PM

Where exactly is the lock? I looked on the underside of the wheel but didnt see anything, is it more by thr footwell and obdII port? Im going to go back to the dealership in the morning and beat the hell out of it. If Ibreak it even more than oh well its already broken, right? I just cant afford to spend 1100 on this

kenchan 02-06-2014 06:51 PM

you have to lay on your back completely and look directly up behind the steering column take a flash light.

check diy for pict.

You could buy a new lock and change it yourself for much less than that. Then once you have the new lock installed you can cut the wire or pull the fuse so it doesn't happen again.

Would I need to reprogram the keys, and would it matter which lock I got if im just going to pull the fuse

You won't have to reprogram the keys no matter which route you go. Maybe you can buy/borrow ken's spare one, pull the fuse then swap ken's out for your dead one. SideNote: that may or may not work, I haven't heard of anyone doing it that exact way, just a thought.

Hmm, the damn dealer is trying to charge me to reprogram them. That would be a cool idea to swap but might just be a hassle if it doesnt work once I take his spare back out.

Your dealer is full of sh!t. Reprogram the keys? Yeah, right - nice way for them to pick your pocket some more...

I bet that your column lock is covered under the recall and the dealer is just trying to get cash out of you. Call a couple of other dealers, or Nissan's Consumer Affairs (I think that's what it's called, an 800 number should be in the Owner's Manual) and see what they say.

If it really isn't covered under the recall, go back to the dealer and pound on the lock and you should be able to release it. After it's been released, drive out of that stealership like a bat out of hell and do as kenchan suggested - pull the fuse or clip the brown wire.

maizenblue 02-07-2014 10:11 AM

alright so i walked into the dealership service department today, hammer in hand. the guy at the desk just gave me a wtf look as i walked over to my car. started bashing on the steering lock and what do you know, it worked! took her home and clipped the brown wire, hopefully no more steering lock issues for me!

JARblue 02-07-2014 10:15 AM

Congratulations! That's freaking awesome that you went into the dealer with a hammer :rofl2: Nicely done :tiphat:

GJ. you see, the best diy's are all done by the kenchan. now pull the fuse or cut brown wire while it works.

kenchan: diy, tools needed are hammer. :ugh:

DE: diy, tools needed are pliers. :wtf2:
