Nissan could stay away from a turbo 4 banger but they have not invested into a proper new engine.
It seems they just want to take anything they have and put out a 300HP turbo 4 and call it a day. Just looked up the IDx size and it is a little smaller than the FRS so unless Nissan is building 2 cars of the same size the IDx is the response to the FRS.

And if that turbo 4 came in a <3000lb car, I'd be all for it. Bonus points if it had forged internals.

If Nissan wants to be different then why don't they introduce an n/a, single and twin turbo inline 6?

Go talk to the accountants, the Z is not the halo car so before certain choices are made the accountants and finance guys set the rules.
I would say a 2 engine option could help bring the Z life around again, has worked for the muscle car guys, but only if done in huge volumes. Not 10k cars sold per year, but 10-20k per month.

It's like people don't understand how much making a car costs. We can wish for all the crap in the world, but as long as they sell <1000 units a month we'll be lucky to get one engine option. I'd be shocked if the next Z didn't have some flavor of a VQ in it simply because I can't imagine Nissan building a new motor just for the Z. The money doesn't work for that. Honestly, all I'd expect for a new Z is a revised VQ with DI for torque and gas mileage and a couple hundred pound lighter chassis.

I could be wrong. They could spend a boatload of cash and gamble that it would increase sales to 350z levels. If I were a shareholder I wouldn't be too happy about it, but it's definitely a gamble they could make.

Yep, and unlike say the Mustang, the Z is already an international car. So for Ford, the mustang is about to blow up even more by entering other markets allowing them to do even more (hence the 3 engine announcement).

Honestly, I fear to say it but the rumors of the reduced engine with a turbo in my mind means 4 banger turbo for the Z. Probably a 2.5L turbo setup which pumps out 345HP and weights in at 3100lbs (they won't go below 3k because of the IDx).

I don't understand the hate on the turbo 4 possibility. I've never seen a factory turbo motor that couldn't handle a 15-20% bump in power with an exhaust and a reflash. The same people that bitch nonstop about how little power bolt ons make on a NA V6 should be out running victory laps if the car comes with a turbo 4.

You both need to relax. I only posted what I thought would be cool. Don't lecture me on economies of scale. It's funny how people think they know everything like their opinion is the last word.

Jesus, relax there. You threw out an idea that would and could never happen, and it was discussed. Care for a Midol?

It's the same assbackwards thinking that kept the SVO Mustangs from ever taking off and they were fantastic cars for their time. "Because that's the way it's always been" is a terrible reason for doing something. Plus, did those same guys cry rivers of tears when the Z went from an inline 6 to a V6? Hell, a turbo 2.5 would still be a larger engine than the 240z had in it.
Jordo! likes this.

Now that's called commitment buddy!! I kinda feel the same way about my z...just something about it that makes me wanna keep it. On another note your time spent building your race car is absolutely impressive!
