High RPM on low speeds

It was about -29 degrees Celsius last night when I was cruising at about 120kph on 6th gear, I noticed that the rpm was literally at 2800-2900RPM. I asked a mechanic and he said it's probably due to the cold weather. The car was already warmed up though. I slowed down to 100kph and the rpm was still relatively high for 6th gear at 2500rpm. Any ideas what is wrong? It's a 2009 with sport package running on blizzack tires 245 18 front and 275 19 rear. Thanks.

Doesn't sound high.

You title should be "Low RPM at high speeds". I would not consider 120 clicks as low speed.

Yup sounds normal to me. I'm around 2700 rpm at 70mph (112km)

Sounds normal to me.

And maybe its just me or I am completely ignorant about something, but WTF would temp have anything to do with transmission gearing and RPM of engine unless the actual clutch was slipping.

I would never talk to that mechanic again lol.

Thank you. That was making my head hurt.

After going through some -40-50 degree wind chills here in chicago, I can tell you my SUV sounds like shiet driving in that cold compared to warmer weather.

Chuck33079 01-08-2014 11:43 AM

Sounds? Sure. A different cruising rpm at the same speed? Unlikely.

You're going pretty fast man. Must be your first time paying attention to your RPMs :shakes head:

luigi90210 01-08-2014 01:04 PM

completely normal, nothing to worry about

street2soul 01-08-2014 02:01 PM

it wouldn't make sense to have a slightly higher RPM than "usual" when you're already in gear and moving. Unless you're slipping clutch constantly. btw the rpm sounds normal for your car. pretty short gears and relatively high RPM at 60-70mph compared to other cars like camaro and mustang
