Addons from Dealer?
The dealer is still trying to sell me this Teflon treatment (something 5 system) and a rust prevention device that hooks up to your battery. They said these are a MUST, especially in Hawaii (saltwater and extreme bird poop). Anyone have experience with either products?

the rust prevention thing has been around forever. the theory is that since rust is electrons leaving the iron by electrifying the car the electrons wont leave. ive never heard if it actually works. I didnt think people still did it.

They are all a waste of money dude, don't buy anything extra. When you pick up your car give it a good coat of a quality wax. I like Meguiar's NXT tech wax. Every 3 months or 6 if you are not that picky, give your car a claybar treatment and then recoat with a wax again. Your finish will always look new.
Those add-ons are only there to increase the dealer profit. |

I haven't heard of these types "services" in a couple of decades. No idea if the Hawaii angle is real or not. You could call other dealers and see if they offer such services so you at least know if it's common.

The "Teflon" thing is nothing more than a polymer wax. If you want a high-quality polymer wax, go with Zaino Brothers... <$75 will get you a kit that will have all you need to apply your own barrier, and the stuff is awesome (I easily go year or more between coats, and bird poop and sun-fried egg (don't ask) wipes off or rolls off in the rain).
The rust prevention thing is complete crap (take it from an electrical engineer with a partial background in (among many other things) materials). Rust is a chemical reaction between iron and oxygen (and is sped up by an electrolyte, such as water and road "salts"), creating a new substance. There is nothing you can hook up to the battery that will prevent such a reaction. The manufacturers of such devices are confusing rust with galvanic reactions, which depletes one of the materials via ion migration.

lol...yeah, supposedly people around here has poop rings etched in to their cars like water spots. "They are all a waste of money dude, don't buy anything extra. Are either of these wax Zaino/NXT good for a vehicle parked outside 100% of the time or would I need something stronger to protect the paint? -All thanks for the great responses. I figure it was a gimmick since I never heard of any of these when buying a car in CONUS. |

Selling the add on is where the dealerships make their money. Just know going in that you don't absolutely need them. If you still want them then go for it. At the end of the day its your money to spend as you please.

I would only get something that will prevent dings and dents from idiots who open their doors without looking. Can you tell I just got a door ding? I wouldn't be made if it was a rock from the road...but a door ding? Come on...

I work at a dealership as a business officer selling that "extra stuff" and its not all crap. I Diamond Kote my Nissan (polymer based) and love it. I also sell those rust protectors. The good ones come with sacraficial anodes made of Zinc. Those zinc strips will rust faster than any other metal on the car. The key to buying those products is to barter on the price. There is alot of markup. Should be able to buy Paint & Fabric & Rust protection for about $499. Most places will try to start at $1299.
