Extended Warrenty
 

Just got my car last March. Already getting offers warrenty from third party Vehicle Protection Center co. Still have 2 more yrs from Nissan. They offered 5 yrs 100,000 miles for 2,893$. It would start today.
My question to them was why would I lose 2 yrs of the factory? They countered with extending it 2 more yrs at the same price. I said I`d think about it then they said offer was good for today only. I said I would not commit today!
Then they came back and knocked off an additional 200.00$ I still told them I was not going to commit today and the lady started to get really pushy. With out going in to the rest of it I ended up hanging up on her. WTF? Anybody dealt with any of this and did you purchase any?

I got my Z with the factory warranty, a dealer 100K power train warranty, and the third party warranty to 75k for $1300. For the first few years the Nissan warranty covers about everything and the rest do seem superfluous. in fact I had an extra warranrty on a laser printer and when it died the manufacturer warranty is what saved the day.

Buy the coverage if you think you will need it, it is quite a chunk of change. I did not get the extra warranty on my Toyoa and I had to buy new struts for $750 but that was still a lot cheaper than the warranty would have cost.

The conventional wisdom is to never buy a 3rd party extended service contract.

If you really want one, buy the Nissan Factory extended service contract.

Santa Rosa Nissan is California has the lowest price on these that I know of.

But their after sale service is quite lacking from my personal experience. Read the Extended Warranty thread before you buy:

I agree the Nissan ext service contract is the way to go though.

3rd Party Warrantees
 

Consumer Reports says NO! Mostly a waste of money. Lots of people have trouble with them when things go south. And, I agree. And since you bought your Z new, chances are you will not even have it in 4 or 5 years.

Personally, I would only buy an extended warranty through the manufacturer. when you run into issues, coverage is seamless. Just pay your deductible and forget about the rest. It seems like third party warranties are hit or miss though so I would say don't get it.

When I was financing I bought the warranty from Toyota (Toyota Care Extended Warranty). I talked him down to $1500 for 100000Mi/7Yr. Its bumper to bumper. Now that I have 36000Mi its time for it to kick in.

I could have purchased the warranty from Nissan but that would be aside and directly from them was around $2400...:icon23:

I got the Nissan Platinum package from Nissan of Santa Rosa. They are a bit slow with the paperwork, but I was able to verify with Nissan that I actually had the warranty before the paperwork eventually arrived.

For me, this car has way too many expensive components to gamble with. I plan on keeping my car a LONG time, so that's a big factor in the decision. One big failure will pay for the warranty quickly. Been there, done that twice in the past and will never do it again.

It's all a matter of personal choice.

I got whatever the longest one was. Figured I'm gonna keep this car for a while and drive it a lot, so I didn't mind paying for at least peace of mind, and if something major breaks thats covered, it could end up paying for itself.

True. I don't plan on keeping cars for that long. The Z was a different situation because I didn't plan on keeping it stock enough for warranty coverage anyhow :)

Good point B15. I`m gonna start to modify things here shortly.

Never buy 3rd party. Wait until about 3 months before the facory is up...and at that time if you think you will be keeping the car - review all the Nissan factory ones and choose one of them.

I have a roadster - so as I near the 3 year mark (2.5 years form now) I will do the above. With all the top issues - there is no way I would keep it AFTER the 3 years w/o a warranty as the top replacement is almost 10k. And I'm on my second one already.

Also - with factory - if you don't like your dealership - take it to another one and it's all easy breezy.

Buy either a Nissan extended or Zurich, I work for honda in service and have delt with many extended warranties, Honda care is easy and Zurich is the only aftermarket I would suggest, GE sucks, fidelity is ok, easy care is ok, all others I have delt with are for the birds. BTW there is no such thing as bumper to bumper, read the contracts before you do anything.
