When I got into my accident (Guy decided to throw his truck into reverse at a stop light and drive up on my hood), I called the police right then and there.

The guy gave me his info and left, but I waited there for the police to arrive.

It's always best to get a police report in as soon as possible (Preferably at the scene of the accident) so stories can't get tossed and turned.

Best of luck, and sorry to see it happen to you :(

Also oddly enough, when my father got into an accident a few years ago .. some kid thinking he was cool in his Maxima in the snow T-boned him .. they went through insurance and (of course) it was the kids fault. However, it is on my dads driving report that he was involved in an accident so when he was searching for motorcycle insurance last year, some places were quoting him ridiculous high prices just because he was in an accident, even though he was at no fault. Insurance companies are sketchy. I never had that issue.

This is always a gut call to me and since it is a nice sports car, OP made the right call.
I rear ended a firebird in a pontiac about 10 yrs ago. I asked them not to involve police because I was throwing up and didn't want to wait. I had a fever and blah blah. Anyway I told insurance the truth when they called to verify and I never heard another word. Rates never went up either. Not a lot of damage though.

I too had a vehicle back over my hood. This was my 280, never called the cops never got insurance involved, until he realized i was not allowing my hood to be drilled and bondo crammed in it. I demanded a new hood and bumper and he was like ok, insurance will take it. He fessed up honestly and his insurance covered it.

I barely bumped a lady at a yield and she had to have the cops involved. Being a young kid I did not have insurance because I was unemployed and well those were the times for a poor mexican kid. Wasted my day and cost me a couple hundred(no insurance ticket) over a light bump, she threatened to sue for whiplash and take my car away. The cop laughed because there was no damage and laid into the lady. What a stupid woman.

I can understand why people don't want police involved, insurance though, I don't understand that at all.

:tiphat: Excellent, and I am sorry for your damages. Do everything through insurance, BTW.

Always go through insurance. On the other hand, I did take somebody's cash offer once though (they forked over 3k in cash on the spot).

Did you still eat at chipotle? What did you order?

If the damage is over $500 you are required to inform the DMV. Many moons ago I was rear ended and the driver pleaded with me to just pay it off. There was a shop nearby and I got a quote for repairs and I was paid in cash a half hour later. I GOT LUCKY that there were no other issues. If you accept cash and something goes wrong later, you cannot go back as you have settled the claim.

I've been clipped before on the freeway (thankfully not in my Z) and when I called the police, they told me that they wouldn't roll a car out to take a report unless there was significant damage and/or injuries. This was in MA near Boston. Fortunately my insurance company is on the up and up and took care of everything for me, even when the other driver tried pulling some BS after the fact. Wouldn't have even been an issue if the staties bothered taking a report at the scene.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I really do appreciate all your kind words and tips:tiphat: I did make a mistake by not calling the police for a report :shakes head: However, I did get her to write her own statement/report on what exactly happened. She signed the paper and I have it safely in my hands. I also snapped pictures of my car at the exact location the accident. As soon as I got hit, I slammed my brakes, got out, took few photos and pulled in safely. She didn't.

The damage seems all cosmetic. It's hard to tell but I don't think there are any indent on my rear bumper. But the paint stood no chance. Some parts are down to the plastic. I believe she struck my rear with both license plate and front bumper. Part of her front bumper also came loose. Her car definitely took more damage than mine.

Got rear ended

But did you still eat at chipotle?

Gadgetech 12-28-2013 05:08 PM

That's what you get for going to Chipotle. :ugh2:

I was making a left turn one time and the person behind me somehow thought I was pulling over to the right :eekdance: (with my left turn signal on). She hit me on my left rear wheel and all was fine so we all went on our merry way after she begged to not call police which would have been difficult anyway b/c we didn't have cell phones then. That is until SCHP called my Mom (I was probably 16) saying I left the scene of an accident…LOL. We all went to the DMV and one of the head honchos out there got pretty irritated with the lady and said you pay for your own damage…no report. I figure she got home and her husband was like what happened? Oh, hell no.

YES I DID! After the accident, I felt like crap and my urge for Chipotle died. HOWEVER!!!!! If I just went home without getting my Chipotle, that means that I just drove to Chipotle only to get rear ended and come home with nothing. SO! to have some sort of purpose to all this, I bought myself a burrito and went home. My mood made the burrito taste like crap but I forced at least 3/4 of it and gave the rest to my dog Teri

plato 12-28-2013 07:07 PM

Sounds like the night turned out pretty sweet for Teri.

I had similar damage on my Z before when I got rear ended. The thing about taking it to a body shop is that the paint they will use will most likely not match the rest of the car. It really sucked for my white Z and I just decided to buy a whole bumper from a member here who replaced his for a aftermarket. Luckily for me, i only paid like 350. Just a heads up about getting ur bumper repaired.

For the love of god people - Call the cops and get the facts on record.

If you want to be a nice guy, donate some time to a charitable organization.

To consider not involving the cops and insurance just shows immaturity. I lost count of the number of threads like this where the OP ends up whining about getting screwed.

Live your life right and do the right thing. It's not always the easy way out, but there's a reason why matters are handled certain ways.
