Default 7AT vs 6MT

First I want to apologize if this has already been posted. I have noticed plenty of heated discussions over this topic. I never considered opting for the 7AT since I want to make BIG HORSEPOWER (600-700whp). As far as I am aware the 6MT will handle that power more efficiently than the 7AT. With that being said I do know some AT with 600hp. I have noticed 6spd 370z getting more power with bolt-ons and ECU reflashes than 7AT. Are any of you guys with 7AT looking to make big power, or is it more for cruising and convenience? 6MT owners did you make your decision based solely on the immersion of the driving experience? Automatic transmissions are so good now you really don't need Manuals anymore. They hold gears until you are ready to shift and can shift faster than humanly possible. They have even made heel and toe obsolete (SRM). Is there any particular reason why u chose one over the other?

You are thinking of dual clutch transmissions. The 370Z uses a traditional "slush bucket" design but is one of the best executed ones ever. The shift speed on it is arround 500 milliseconds, far better than it's predecessor (or almost any other standard automatic I've ever heard of). Nissan has a dual clutch transmission in the GTR but it costs more than 1/2 a 370Z by itself.

What are your plans for the car? If you really want to make 600-700 I would strongly suggest you go with the 6MT. We have done several high HP AT here, but they never operate as well as the 6MT. With that said we have yet to do a high HP 7AT 370z, but I would imagine it will behave similar to the 350z HR and G37s AT we have done.

Agreed, high hp builds, stick with the 6mt.

I purchased the 6spd sport and have 2k miles so far. I trying to be patient with the mods. The power is not enough for me so I plan on changing the exhaust, HFC and doing a ECU Reflash. Down the line I'm going to TT it, and possibly do internals if the power is still not sufficient. I want to make power while still having the vehicle reliable.

I agree, stick with the 6mt for high HP applications. Besides, it's more fun to drive a stick.

I wouldnt run a TT if you want "reliable" power, I think a supercharger would be right up your alley, daily driven juice, and great for time attack as well. If you want more power, a change of the pulley and a tune, and your there. 450-500whp should be easily realized.

Go with the 6mt if this is going to be a track star.

Thx 4 the advice Red, just don't know if a supercharger will give me the power I want and once I go that route there's no turning back. At least with TT I know the gains would be substantial. TT's is probably 5yrs away so I can wait to see how other ppl are managing with it.

I know of quite a few 1k+ whp supercharger builds, particularly on 5.0 Mustangs. It can be done, and a starter kit will be substantially less expensive than a TT setup, about 5-6k.

Hey Nick. I live in the Bx but I went to Maryland for the Z. Unfortunately there were only 15 6spd in the entire northeast when I purchased mine. Most dealers didn't have a manual or the color I wanted. Most dealers have automatics and Touring models. So I made a road trip. The dealership I went to is the "largest 370z dealer in the northeast". There were at least 20 Z's when I arrived. They gave me a price I was pleased with, and the rest is history.

I didn't realize superchargers made that much power. I'll keep my options open. We are all still waiting for someone to offer a supercharger. Fortunately I am very patient.

They don't make anywhere near that power on these cars. The mustangs have always made tons of power when modded like that, the 370z will never see power levels that high with a supercharger.
