Crazy idea?!
What's going on everyone? New to the forum and don't own a Z. That's actually where the crazy idea comes into play. I currently have a 2012 Genesis Coupe 2.0t with only 9000 miles on her. Bought it new and have done just a few mods thus far. I love the car and it feels pretty fast without putting down crazy numbers. Buttttt, I look at the 370z and get a cream in the jeans feeling knowing that stock it will put mine to shame even with the mods I've done lol. There are a few problems with this idea though. First, the Hyundai depreciates like a mother and I'll be lucky to get a decent deal for trade in. Anddd second, I still owe 19 on her. With that being said, I'd have to trade mine in on an older model if I did. I've done a good bit of research and have found a few 09's for good deals but I feel like it may be a terrible idea to trade back three years and 10,000 miles yet still find myself actually thinking about doing it lol. Opinions?? Has anyone else taken the plunge and traded back on a relatively new vehicle for a different beast?

i test drove the genesis 3.8 track as well as their 3.8 auto, but when I drove the Z it was "love at first sight" so to speak. totally different animal. the Z feels special. the genesis is a really nice and loaded car though. great interior and great price.
if you're driving auto, the Z will be an even more massive improvement. if manual, i'd stay away from 09's due to oil consumption issues. so far the car has been really reliable even though i got it with high mileage so no worries there. i always like to let you genesis guys hear my exhaust as i'm passing lol i'd say go drive a Z and see how much more enjoyment you'll get. oh and drive one with a sport package.

Long time Z fan, 260, 280, 300, 350, 370...did drive the 3.8 R Spec and Touring around before I bought the 370. Dollar for dollar the interior blows the Z away. Performance wise, it really was no contest. The 3.8, albeit, quick, did not inspire any confidence in any facet. Not that it was bad, far, far from it. Certainly more of a GT cruiser, and a very good one (have an Accord and Volvo for that). Did trade in a 2012 Nissan SUV (had for about 10 months after I thought it was time to grow up-as my new wife stated and get rid of of my 350Z) for the 13 370z. Yes, still married. She agreed my driving happiness is selfishly, childishly, mercifully tolerated, even adoringly encouraged-or so i think, lol. Could not stand driving that boat. It was terrible in every way. Im throwing up a little thinking about it. Emmm....I dont even know about the finances. LOL. I threw money at them, along with the keys and drove the Z away.

I'm not a fan of trading that far back, I'd try and get a deal on a newer car or stick with what I have until I could afford a newer one. $19k doesn't look to be too far off from a clean trade in. Could you sell it outright and break even?

Keep in mind I have the pre-2013 base model 2.0. I have the 210hp rather than 274 on the 2013 2.0 or even 306 for the 2012 3.8. Stock, my car hit ~165 hp to the wheels. Barfffff lol So stock for stock going from mine to the Z would be a big upgrade. After the few mods I've done, I'm now at ~210hp and 230tq to the wheels but still a good bit less than a stock Z. I don't plan on doing anything more with a Z than I have with mine which would be intake, exhaust, and a tune. I just get nervous about giving up a couple years, the miles, and warranty to trade back. From what I've seen though, aside from the few common things I've read on here (steering lock issue, fuel starvation, and oil temps) the car seems to be pretty reliable for most. And if you're wondering, yes my genesis is an auto and I'd go for the auto Z also. I know I know...Can't drive, gtfo, no stick no dic*, yada yada yada haha

Like marriage, Choose in haste and repent in leisure. I think the OP has made his bed and should sleep in it. Sorry to say but to lose so much with a trade seems a lesson for next time, choose carefully. The Genesis can't be that bad, I hope.
Good luck either way.

Yes, it's a bad idea to trade a nearly new car for a older used one of unknown mileage and upkeep. Or be a typical consumer and keep rolling negative equity forward so you'll still be paying for the Hyundai six cars from now.

I've owned both an auto and manual Z. I prefer the manual, but if you want an auto in any car the Z is the one to get it in. If anyone gives you any "I'm insecure in my manhood" flack, just tell them you are a serious 1/4 mile racer and only the quickest transmission would do for you (the 7AT is fast). Then excuse yourself to go get a creatine and dynamite milkshake that you need to drink before you go fertilize all the ripe ova at the nearby Hooters.

Even though Hyundai has come a long way from there past massive failures I still think they have not garnered the confidence back yet in the general public. The rapid depreciation only seems to strengthen this point.
@ op-- you should drive the car for at least a couple more years and try to pay it off as much as you can. It is still a nice car so it shouldn't be too hard to wait it out. |
