I'd consider stepping up in tire quality a mod

I could have cheaped out and got Nankang or the Hankook V12 (or just get the OEM again) but going with a higher wear high performance tire and shelling out more seems like a bit of a mod to me (IMO)

Just waiting for my discs to wear before I upgrade to slotted discs hehe

Agreed, however, there are parts that are listed as wear items and, as such, are not covered under warranty. These are the things that I consider upgrades and not mods. Things like tires, brake pads, clutch plate and the like. You can replace the wear item with a higher or lower quality part but unless you change the system that uses the wear item it's an upgrade and not a mod. For instance, if you install better brake pads => upgrade but if you install a BBK => mod.

almost 10k if you consider the 2 sets of tires ive gone through, oil changes and other oils/fluids.

ive kept a huge spreadsheet of it all, down to the dollar spent on crush washers, zip ties, etc

I suppose I should preface this with saying that I haven't historically been much in to "modding" so I could very well be using the terms differently than most.

If we use the dictionary definition of modification then any change from factory spec is a modification and using higher quality components in lieu of factory spec is an upgrade. That said, I've always assumed that "mod", "mods" or "modding" were all more specific terms that related to changing/improving either aesthetics or car systems. It's definitely and interesting semantic argument.

For instance, if you take the viewpoint I've been using then K&N filters and Z1 post-MAF tubes are upgrades whereas Stillen G3 intakes are mods. Like you suggested, if we use any upgrade is a mod then going to a better engine fluid is a mod and if we use the dictionary definition any deviation from factory spec is a mod.

I'm probably overthinking it...lol.

Edit: I have a weakness/enjoyment for semantic arguments so if anyone gets fed up just tell me to !

but i just opened up a can of worms about the eyecandy remark vs mods.

if the car looks more pleasing than stock, would that be a mod, even if the wheels are gravity cast, tires they used are garbage? (or would we just close that off calling it rice? )

thus troyz's going wahahahahahaha!!! with popcorn.
