Does it hurt to skip gears? I mean for up-shifting like 4th to 6th. Once I get up to speed I just want to save a few bucks on gas.

Nope, I do it all the time. 1st, 3rd, 6th. Just depends on if I am rolling down hill or expecting to stop soon. Just don't stick with the same exact gears for months on end. Just change to what gear it feels right in.

When I get on the freeway in the morning I have to merge quickly across about 6 lanes to the left as cars coming up behind me are merging towards the right as the freeway splits shortly ahead of where I enter. That means I get on in 4th gear and in a good part of the torque curve, make my moves and as soon as I am comfortably over to the other part of the freeway I shift from 4th to 6th skipping 5th and back off a little. I don't see how this could cause any problems.

It happens quite often actually. Say you are cruising at 35 mph on 5th gear and you are just rolling to slow down. Personally I would not shift sequentially but just skip to 2nd/3rd. Another example is when you want to accelerate hard out from higher gears, I would go from 6th to 2nd/3rd and step on the gas.

one, two, four, six. Is usually what I do unless it is a situation where I need the gearing.
Other than that most of the time on the race to 40 or 45mph on the city streets, I'm skipping gears. In these situations shifting under 2 grand, damn most of the time by 30mph I'm already in 4th gear.

![]() maybe some minor wear on syncro's but shouldn't hurt it. i usually dont skip gears unless it's for a downshift say 6 to 4.. but i clutch-out once in neutral and then enter the next gate (6-N-4). is it necessary? no. just an old habit of mine. ![]() |

I once was called a perfectionist, because I made sure I went in sequence.
However, I've been trying to teach myself to go 5-3 when coming to a right-hand turn (at a light). Obviously slowing down a bit more. It just feels so... naughty?... to do it that way. Must fulfill OCD. ![]() |
