This guy nailed it. How else do you think Nissan can claim 19 mpg in town? You're supposed to be in 6th gear on just about any road larger than a 30 mph neighborhood street... I don't think so, Tim.

If you're trying to save gas, note that being in 6th gear at 35 mph is not necessarily the best way unless you can cruise without having to brake or accelerate. You'll get much better acceleration as well as gas mileage by being in the proper gear for each scenario. Of course, this is moot if you're in D in an automatic.

If you're cruising at 40 mph in 6th gear with no traffic that's all well and good; however, if you have to accelerate, you'll be more efficient with gas if you are in 4th gear rather than 6th. Light acceleration in 4th will get you up to speed quicker and use less gas. In 6th gear the car will bog at such a low speed, so you likely will find yourself mashing on the pedal harder than you would in 4th gear and it takes longer to get up to speed meaning you're using more gas for a longer period of time.

I don't really care about my mileage, but on average, I am getting over 20 mpg on my daily commute via Jollyville Rd and frontage road driving to avoid stop and go traffic. I'm lucky to get 12 mpg having fun with it
