Police ticketing for loud exhausts
I've read it many times but I don't fully understand the 'exhaust is too loud and cops will ticket you' mentality. I have many ferarris, lambos, and even an Audi RS4 in my neighborhood that are all damn loud and they are purely stock. I can't imagine that they get regularly ticketed for having too loud an exhaust note...right? There are so few 370Zs in Chicago, I'd just tell the cop it's stock.
What are your thoughts on this? Is it just small town cops that hassle for noise issues? My guess is that Chicago cops couldn't care less. $hit...there are louder Harley's and crotch rockets in my neighborhood... |
here, they give tickets if you run a pipe straight from the headers...no cats and no mufflers.
|
I ran open pipes on most of my american cars, no issues. Although I think Phoenix cops have much better shit to do than the small-town cops.
|
only time ppl get a ticket like this is if they were caught speeding or ran a stop sign. they add it in.
|
Its essentially what amounts to a public nuisance or noise complaint issue...you wouldn't believe how many folks call 911 or a non-emergency line because of someone tearing down roads at full throttle...and heaven help you if you live in a suburban neighborhood, where the "citizen watch" people will call every single night, expecting you to stake out the guy responsible.
|
there is no citizen watch or neighborhood watch here
|
No idea, then. Truly bored cops after a small ticket...or neighbors with nothing better to do.

is it senior citizens that do that??
|
Seniors and also what I call "Fat Lindas." Which are the fat chicks who were fat growing up, so now they sit around and complain and letter-write to make people as miserable as they are.
|
I can't really speak nationwide or beyond, but at least here in Memphis, mostly...yes, its the elderly...though every now and then you also get (at least for me, I work the 4-12 shift) those overnighters who work graveyard and sleep during the day...and they come in all ages...over time, you start to get to know 'em...most of 'em are pretty understanding...if you don't catch 'em in the act, there's not much you can do...but some of 'em are adamant that you do nothing but sit at corner X and Y and wait...and wait...and wait...because at XX:XX, the offender will roll through, and you should be there.
Sigh. :shakes head: |
i got old fellas on my street and they like the G....
they even ask "when are you going to buy an exhaust system??" most of them say "reminds me of my good olde days" |
Most people are cool here, because most people own guns here. But some other places Ive lived havent been so cool.
|
:icon18: Nice! If only all neighbors were such aficionados, eh?
|
Folks..it was just on the national news this past week that due to the economic turndown the police are resorting to increased ticket writing as a revenue generator since the projected sources of money that were planned in the budget are not happening as a direct result of the economy. So I really doubt its due to any particular segment of people complaining to the cops. Its just business.

This is true, though I must confess my comment was originally directed (just slower than yours) to the comment about yours...however, in my opinion it fits both scenarios.
:) |
gotta luv arizona,i run off road headers on a a street legal sand car 500 hp ls2,no problems from johnny law, harleys with pipes are no problem here either:icon17:
|
Most of the ordinances I have seen are that you cannot alter the exhaust system making it louder than stock.

Wrong..... |
How about someone produce some actual proof instead of blabbing back and forth.

altering/modifying is illegal replacing exhaust is fine as long as its below the 95dB reading bealieve me i got my good share of exhaust tickets and trips to the state referee(all are dismissed because i have a replacement exhaust and NOT an altered exhaust as everyone already now cali has the strickest rules when it comes to modding cars |
You guys are lucky you are not in cali, my friend's evo got pulled over here in davis ca for having a loud exhaust i think it can't be over 95 decibels then after that they made him open up his hood unfortunately he had polished intercooler pipes and a intake. The Cop said he had illegal mods and sent him to the state ref. The funny thing was he was going the speed limit lol damn CA cops .
|
They measure with a decibal reader down here...

Where I live, I know you can get it for at least 3 different things. If it's not DOT approved, if it's simply disturbing the peace (has to be really loud), and if you decide to spin the tires a cop may give you an option of reckless driving or loud tail pipe if you're lucky.

Just to let everyone know there is no such thing as a "loud Exhaust ticket"
I have asked my aunt on several occasions and she is a lawyer in Chicago area DAN |

I got one in ohio for my exhaust on my 05 civic being too loud. The actual ticket was operating an unsafe motor vehicle, because apparently it was so loud i wouldn't be able to hear sirens etc
|
Ohh they will gladly give you a ticket for a loud exhaust that = Money to them
The thing you have to do is refuse it trust me on this Like I said I talked to my AUNT who is a Lawyer in the Chicago area and there is no such thing... They just use it to get revenue. There is a Db limit in some city ordanaces but no real state wide law that im aware of.. DAN |
I get the stare, 'cause I only have one plate on the rear. Can't get myself to drill holes in the front. Asked why don't cops ticket loud motorcycles? Because they own Harleys too, and it's a "safety" thing.Try sleeping when a bike goes by with 120db bouncing off the walls.Excuse me for whining, I have issues with that.
|
MY Rx7 got 3 loud exhaust tickets within a 3 months of putting on my exhaust, even after I showed the cops that I've already been ticketed. I have friends who have American cars with louder exhausts and never been ticketed -_-
|
I feel your pain but I don't care for that loud exhaust so I can't start a petition. But maybe someone here should start at least an online petition or a PAC. If you want something done you get a group of like-minded people and threaten pole-ticians with campaigns against them. I guess nobody that owns an exciting car is excited by politics.
|
what is the legal Db noise limit for motor vech.? Is it the same for all states or different.

It's all about what you do with it.
If it sounds like a ricer, you'll get tagged with a fine. If it sounds good, AND not insane, AND you're not revving the engine or being otherwise obnoxious with it - no problem. I have loud pipes on my motorcycle. Loud enough that after a couple hours with a helmet my ears are ringing a BIT - riding in a parking garage it sounds like a AAA Dragster launch when I drop the hammer - lol...and it has caused a couple of cars to chirp when I hammer it in said parking garage. ;) But, I've never had any trouble with the cops because I'm not an asshat with it. |
