Potenza tires make nails expensive!
I haven't even made the first payment on my car yet, and I already have to pay $470 to replace one rear tire because of a nail on the inside wall of my tire.
OUCH! |
they couldnt patch it? $470 seems a bit steep bro, where did you get it?
|
Hey man - the dealer told me the same crap - honestly go get it patched - unless its ON the sidewall you will be fine...

I've never heard of a reputable shop plugging or patching a sidewall.
|
can't patch a side wall....lol
only if the thread gets a nail/screw/etc, it can be patched. they take a grinder to the inner part of the tire, glue on a patch...done. |

I would guess that the tire was on the right rear? One easy way to get a nail is going off on the shoulder to get around someone making a left turn. The nails all wind up there with the rest of the road debris.
|
Just paid $400 for a nail in my rear tire 2 weeks ago.
|
Good grief.....how much will a repair be on my RE-11's? I need tires like Speed Racer had.....you never saw him on the side of the road with the jack out! :p
|
I recently put some Nitto NT05 285/35's on my rears and came out to the price of your 1! Insanity!
|
BTW, I highly recommend the NT05's, sticky as all hell, the grip is AMAZING!

Potenzas are ridiculously over priced and really don't show me anything. You got raped a bit more than normal because you went to the dealer. Even a regular tire store could have gotten you one for about 300-350. When mine are worn out I'm going rim shopping and will probably just throw on some Nittos or Hancooks.

i have tire insurance through discount tire... the initial 200 dollars +68 dollars for the new tire to be insured
|
My new tire will be insured, but the intial tires that come with the car have no "road hazard" warranties.
|
that sucks man, i had 2 nails in my Potenzas (runflats) i got by plugging one and the other one didnt go all the way through i dont think, but yeah in a sidewall nothing you can do really. when i bought my replacement set of tires at the dealer they said i had road hazard on them so im gonna hold them to it as im a nail magnet for some reason

These Potenzas just love nails huh? Either that, or we have the worst luck ever. Mine happened on my rear driver side. :( |
for future reference guys get your potenzas here instead of the dealer or atleast try to have the dealer price match
$470-500 for a that tire is robbery even at say $50 to install $212 plus shipping Tire Search Results |
It's actually $293 plus shipping, but it's a minor difference compared to the the $429 my dealership tried to charge me.
The Potenzas come on the 19" Rays Engineering sport package wheels. :p Tire Search Results |
FYI, guys... they do make a patch now that will handle the sidewall. Not many shops have it (very few even know about it) as it only came out a few years back. I was getting a patch done on my S while in central Florida in late 2006. The guy said he had just attended a training session and the company provided them with a kit to do sidewalls... he said everyone in his team said 'no way' it would work, but they used a nail gun to repeatedly puncture a truck's sidewall, and then patched each one. something about the material the plug was made of combined with its shape allowed it to stay put and keep air in.
Granted, I'm not saying I'd put it in the sidewall of a Z-rated tire and try to drive 130 mph for two hours on the highway, I'm just saying it does exist and it's an option. |
Did no one else pay for the nissan tire insurance thing?? Or is it a South Florida mainly insurance. I paid a little extra on the car and have a nissan tire insurance, meaning if i get a nail or the tire pops for no reason it gets replaced with a new one by nissan.
Works great, seeing as here in south Florida there are gnomes who go out at night and throw nails and screws all over the streets. |
I recently had a nail go through one of my front tires. About 2" from the outer sidewall on the right side. I find that if you pop a little extra to get it done right, you won't have problems with it going out of balance. I actually took mine to our BMW dealer here in Milwaukee and asked if they had a Road Force balancer. That's sooo important after you get this done. Make sure it's a great balancer and they put in a patch vs. a plug.
It's completely understood that most can't do a thing about a sidewall puncture, but if you can get something done about it, do it the right way. This way, there will be no flat-spots, and the dreaded shake in the wheel. I'm thinking with such a sensative steering rack, you could feel if you'd have an ant stuck on your wheel. Okay, JK on that one, but you know what I mean. Oh, it cost me $56 to have this done the right way. No shakes, leaks, or anything, and the Bimmer shop actually thought my car was really cool! They were excited to work on it. This all is MHO. |

I'd have them show it to me...or let me walk with the tire and find someone who'll patch it, if it's not truely in the sidewall. |
i cant believe anyone would buy their tires form the dealership.... $$$

and BTW, 285 wide NT05s will fit on a 9 in. rim! :ugh2:
|
From what I can tell the Nitto's don't perform as well as the Hankook or Kumhos. I'll be replacing my Sports with 275/35/19 and 305/30/19 on the stock sports mags with the Hankook V12s...
