I just hit 3400 miles. I'm going to check my oil first thing tomorrow morning.

My first oil change was at 1500 miles, and I'm currently at about 4500 miles. Just checked the oil, and it took 2 quarts to bring the oil level back to within L and H on the dipstick. =(

Dammit! I just checked my oil level and I'm also below the low mark. First thing thing I'm doing is getting a quart of Redline. I guess they 370 does burn oil as expected. I'm constantly at redline or close to it so that might have attributed to it.

Well I just went and added about 3/8ths of a quart. This is about 1200 miles since my oil change. Will check later to see if it needs any more.

I imagine all this oil getting burned will end up clogging the cats - especially the OEM cats =/
I can't believe that Nissan (or Infiniti) would consider this normal. Just think of it from the emissions point of view... |

You would think Nissan would've remedied this issue by now. What signs of oil consumption do you notice? How much residue do you see on the exhaust tips? Any blue smoke?
During break-in I saw some sticky residue on the exhaust, and it appeared to be normal since everyone else noticed the same.

I am going to keep an eye on my oil levels, checking at least once a week, to see if I have any significant oil burn issues. I have almost 8500 miles on mine now... I wonder if oil burn is no longer a serious concern after the engine has broken in fully?
Still interesting, though. My other cars never burned a drop of oil.

It's normal for high compression engines to burn some oil, guys. By all means we should all keep an eye on this, but I get the sense that we're on the verge of mass hysteria here and I think we need to take a step back. Let's not panic. Be diligent. Keep an eye on your oil levels (which is just common sense anyway). But let's take a deep breath and not work ourselves up into a tizzy over this.

I changed the oil on my Z at around 1250 miles, and I'll do it again at 3750. After that, I don't know. I might go 3750, I might go longer. Still a car, even a high compression engine, shouldn't burn through oil like that. |
