Anyone come from an RX8 ?

Currently own a 2006 rx8 and ive owned it for almost 4 years now. To be honest i never thought i would want another car again cause this car was my dream car but ive had enough of it and the 370z platform has caught my eye for a while now. That and the Evo X.

The power isnt there (currently have low compression on the engine) but even when the engine was healthy it wasnt fast enough for me. Have many small issues here and there such as the trunk not working, the windows making a noise while rolling up, and other little things here and there. I know no car is perfect but i would think NIssan would be better quality.

I want inputs from people whove previously owned an rx8 and now have an evo x. DO you like it better ? Do you regret it ? What do you miss about your rx8?

Probably will be my summer car and i willl buy a beater car for winter. Im still young not married no kids yet. My other option like i said is the Evo X. I was really intrigued by the power its capable of making with just bolt ons and a tune but when i saw one in person at a meet last night, it didnt look good to me. It didnt look sexy as the other amuse 370z i saw.

PS im not trying to make this into a 370z vs evo x thread. THeyre both great cars and both have different things to offer.

Any input is greatly appreciated

I miss the smoothness of the rotary engine, the 4 seats, the steering response and the cheap tires. Other than that, nothing else

I think you're better off asking this in an Evo forum.

I've driven both but I did not own them. Personally I believe the two cars are in different class. The I would miss about the rx-8 will be the exterior/interior design and maybe the RWD. The Evo's interior is ridiculous. The good thing about the Evo is the power, real backseats, and, depends on where you live, 4WD.

But just take the 370z, you won't regret it.

I had a s2000 prior to the 370z. Why were you disappointed? I drove my friend's s2000 after I switched and I hated the s2000. The power band really sucks and I feel cramped sitting inside the car compared to the Z.

Haha the smoothness is probably the only thing ill miss. If i get the Z i wont miss the looks but with the evo i think the looks with be missed.

Ive posted this thread on the evo x forum as well. Trying to get inputs from both sides.

The way i see it right now:

Evo X if i want power and attract dicks

Nismo 370z if i want a sexy coupe and attract chicks

If only the z came boosted it wouldnt even hesistate. I want something with boost but nothing comes boosted with the looks and handling i want .. of course except the GTR

He just hates the Z and looks for any opportunity to bitch about it and put it down.

Hopefully his lease is up soon so he can leave this community.

I had an RX-8 (2004 model I think) and now own a 370Z NISMO. Some of things I do not miss about the RX-8 was the low power, the fact that it would seem to get 15 mpg no matter how I drove it, the heat from the footwells and center console (god forbid you put a cold drink there, cause it wouldn't be in short order).

I did enjoy how light it was and how I could throw it around corners. I also appreciated the suicide doors and back seat (no matter how small it was). Now that I own a Z (having just came from a 2011 5.0 mustang), I feel like I have the fun parts of the RX-8 minus a lot of the drawbacks (the back doors and seats being the only difference really).

I feel like I have 90% of the power of the mustang (I know performance wise its very comperable, but it still feels just a smidge slower which I would equate to the torque difference more than the HP) with the fun to drive part of the RX-8. The Z handles waaaay better than the 5.0 did and I get a hell of a lot more compliments on the Z than I did with either the RX or stang.

I had a lemon law claim on my 2006 RX8 and was issued a full refund for every payment made toward it. The only thing i miss about the RX8 when comparing it to the Z ..... the paint.

Cmike2780 06-21-2013 02:04 PM

I liked my RX-8, but huge lack of torque and off the line grunt really bugged me. The motor was great when it was new, but around 50k miles, it felt like it was on it's way out. Gas mileage was also terrible. I was averaging around 20-22 mpg on the highway and around 14-16 mpg city. It really got annoying with such a small tank. I had to fill up twice a week on average. Adding oil got annoying after a while also. I don't miss having to warm up the engine to move it a few feet on the driveway. On some occasions, I actually ended up just shifting to neutral and pushing. I really hated changing the oil filter on that thing and have the scars to prove it.

I do miss the smoothness at the high rpm's and the overall feel on the road. It felt light and well balanced. You can drive through twisty roads with confidence. The Z by comparison has a heavier feel to the steering. It's not bad, just different.

I have no regret selling the RX-8 & buying the Z. I like the Evo, but I'm kind of tired of it. I dunno....the Z just feels a bit more grown up.

Ive never had issues with the car for the first 2 or so years of ownership. Now its little things here and there pissing me off. Trunk doesnt open unless manually. Window makes a clanking noise when rolled up. Just to name a few. The car has low compression on the front rotor (got it tested last year). My plan was to get the new engine under warranty and then selling it but if im trading it in i dont think the amount of money i would get for it would be much different with the old engine. Also ya the power is not there at all. Ive hated getting beat by civics. Not that i race or anything, just a little street fun sometimes.

Do you guys think it would be wise to get the engine replaced before selling or am i better off just selling it as is ?? Keep in mind im still saving for the new car so i would either have to hold on to his car for a bit after the new engine or if i sold it as is , i would have to drive a shitty civic for a bit till i can afford the z.

I have not driven the RX8, but I have owned an Evo X MR. The dual clutch sucks at low speeds (I may have had a lemon though, I'm not sure, but dealer couldn't and wouldn't fix it). If you get the GSR, it only has 5 gears, which annoyed me personally as I believe 6 is ideal. Besides passengers, the Z is MORE practical. I say this because of the silly trunk in the Evo (they have the battery and washer fluid back there, which cuts on cargo space). You could always put your cargo on the back seats, but that's messy IMO.

If the MR's dual clutch behaved properly, I would have probably still kept it, but proper dual clutches are hard to come by..

The Z also looks so sick, and the interior is no comparison. If you get bad weather though, the Z isnt the best choice. I can comment a lot on the two, if you need more advice feel free to ask anything.

And I just like to take this time out and again say how much JungleZ annoys me, as well as this entire forum.
Edit: I genuinely think he likes all the negative attention he gets from here. Why he is still on this forum is beyond me..

Since you asked. In 2011 I bought a 2010 RX8 with 5k on it as a "toy" car to play with. It was fully loaded sans navigation - and owned by a woman. I did my research and knew all the "issues" - but I figured they were no big deal if managed.

Within the first week I knew I had made a mistake for the type of driver/owner I am.

Low on power, horrible mileage, cheap plastics, oil consumption to the max, terrible build quality, water in tail lights, pain to maintain, etc... Upside - 4 doors, it was light and handled well once you got it going.

The Z is in another league. Design, materials, build quality, engine, - everything. Think of it like if you were comparing our Z to a Cayman or 911. That's how far a step up it is.

Most Z's are fairly bullet proof. The only chance you have of getting a decent price is to have the rotary engine replaced under warranty.
