No, not at all. You can have the choice to mount to your windshield while utilizing the 12v socket on passenger side, which BTW is my setup. There is a limited amount of cord due to short distance and design of the cord.
You could always hard wire the unit which comes with the necessary hardware. Check out their website. It is all there. They also have options to hide the unit from sight for discreet monitoring. Again, the V1 is one awesome detector. Nothing against the Passport unit.....it's just personal preference.
