Why the ocassional pause when starting?

Some ppl have been reporting a short delay between pressing the start button and the engine cranking. So far, no one has been able to figure out what triggers the delay. Does anybody know? Do you have a theory? Please post any answers or guesses.

LMBmikeZ posits that it's the car doing an extra self-check. Sounds reasonable to me, but what is it checking and why doesn't it get checked every time?

Awww....come on Ken, be nice! After all, tis the season! I care and can relate to what the op is saying. I have wondered about this ever since I got mine and to be honest, I do find it annoying at times. At times after holding my finger on the button without it starting, I will take it off just before it was going to start and will have to do it again. It's a minor 370Z annoyance but no less an annoyance. Merry Christmas

I FINALLY had the privilege of experiencing this delay after removing my fuse several weeks ago.

Two full seconds for sure. I don't care that it happens; I'm just curious about why it happens.

I do not have to hold down the start button to start the Z. You should be able to simply push it once briefly and let go. Usually it begins the sequence as I'm letting off the button or right after, but what I just experienced the other day was I pushed the button quickly and there was a significant delay even after letting off. In fact, during this delay I was able to fully buckle my seat belt before the car started.

I experience the same thing on an intermittent and inconsistent basis. Just push the start button and don't hold the button in. Most the time starts without delay.

I have the bypass harness to isolate the steering lock. In the car today I paid close attention to the start sequence. In my car today and of late as I pay attention, its simply rocket quick.
Hit the button quickly and release today on 2 starts and the car is fully started in less than 2 seconds. I mean its fast. I have felt zero delay since installing the bypass harness. Curious if other harness folks have seen a delay.

The slow start I once thought was because of short trips and the battery not getting a good charge. After 30 minutes on the track I got gas and it happened in front of a stranger who said " Can't be, it did not get enough of a charge"

He did not even know this had happened before.

id be more concerned about nails in my tire without me knowing...

now everyone's paranoid and will check their tires tonight.

Ah... maybe that's what the delay comes from?

The ECU is busy checking if there are nails in the tires before the safe start??? Good point kenchan.
