Never had a problem with low fuel let alone 3 dots. I have tried to duplicate this situation very close to my house by going really fast around on and exit ramps had 1 dot and eventually had a blinking warning on the car. I know some people will just say I was not pushing the car hard enough and maybe I was not but I definitely was pushing the car hard. I'm not saying the problem does not exist just weird how some people experience it and some do not just like oil consumption and the "horrible" shifting tranny that so many complain about.

No you shouldn't! Besides my Z, I own two 40 year old Corvettes, no issues with fuel starvation with 'em. Nor has anyone else that I know of with an "old American car". Just sayin'...

Glad you got things sorted out quickly and are back on the road!

I know what the setup looks like, you have shown it to me 50498509380538 times on other threads about this. All I'm saying is like horrible shifting and massive oil consumption two other huge complains on this forum I have never had this problem even if was going out of my way to cause the problem.

And that's the side with the fuel pump. So you're pumping air. Our Z has 2 fuel sending units in the tank. Left side and right side. If you got fuel in the left side and empty on the right side. It will still read that you have fuel in the tank.

The 1st picture is from the left side looking right.
The 2nd picture is from the right side looking left.
The 3rd and 4th pictures are looking at the baffle from the right side. I had to bend it out of the way for clearance when i installed "phunk's" fuel pump.
wow thanks for the pics. makes things much easier to imagine.

ive had this happen once before and luckily it was an empty street. took an exit cloverleaf ramp off the freeway quick. im talking 50mph, and got back on the gas right away. except...the car went no where. no SES lights, no VDC. just a dead gas pedal and a few dots over 1/4 tank of gas. thought the clutch failed me or something, but i realized it was fuel starvation. now i definitely keep the gas up full or near full

I'm not sure what your point is. Oil consumption was an issue on certain cars, not all. Shift quality is a function of your expectations.

This is a design flaw, and something completely separate.

No no, I'm not talking about shift quality. I have said over and over again the Tranny is noisy while shifting and can sound clunky. I'm talking about the reports of grinding gears, missing shifts, and hard shifting. 3 years old 26k and mine still shifts smooth with the movement of one finger.

Don't you have the 3rd revision of the transmission in your 2010?

Regardless, this thread is about fuel starvation, not shift quality. There are other threads for those topics.

You mean all 370Z cars, right? Cause I recently helped a buddy reinstall his Suburban gas tank (he replaced the fuel sending unit), and that thing is exactly what I would expect a fuel tank to look like - a big rectangle, more or less flat on the bottom. The Z's tank is shaped like that because of the rear strut brace if I'm not mistaken. Terrible design flaw... worst on the vehicle IMO

I run my tank down to empty (0 dots, --- Miles Remaining) more than 50% of the time. The other 50% of the time I fill up with less than 3 dots remaining. I have never experienced this problem, but that's because I'm fully aware of it. I'm not extra cautious on right hand turns or anything, but I am definitely aware not to push too hard when gas is low.

Really sucky OP

Luckily its never happened, I've gone down to 1 or 2 dots where it tells me 65kms left, then 5 minutes later it will say 30km left lol. Craziness

I typically try to not go below a quater anyways

I always get gas between 250-275 miles on the tank, depending on how I've been driving it. Sometimes that's three dots, sometimes five. If I'm low on gas I don't beat on the car. I can only imagine what would happen if I hit fuel starvation under boost. Hopefully the car would just sputter and die.

Yes, sorry if that wasnt clear. It's probably not fair to say the 370 is completely unique in its tank design, but it's certainly an odd bit of engineering.

Yikes....because I drive about 100 miles per day, I usually stop for gas at 3 lights and even 2 at times and I never ran out. Looks like I got lucky! I won't be waiting that long for now on! Thanks for the info!
