Move under idle power only - 6mt?
Does anyone else ever creep along under only idle power in 1st gear?
Just found out I could do this a few weeks ago and it makes stop/go traffic a lot easier. The throttle tip-in is a little jerky at very low speeds (< 5 mph), and I hated always clutching in and out when creeping along. Then I discovered that if you're going really slow, you can just let the clutch out in 1st gear, and the idle power will keep the car inching forward at about 2 or 3 mph. Only works on level ground, and very small upgrades. Just curious if I'm the only one. |

I definitely do this when the occasion calls for it. I found this trick many years ago in my '95 Miata!

This doesn't work for me unless I'm on a slight down grade that lasts for a while. Seems like it would be tricky to do that without stalling the car if you're in an area where the grade is changing slowly.

I was once told (or maybe just overheard) that if you can't get your car rolling w/o using the gas pedal, then you don't know how to drive manual properly.
So I taught myself that "technique" (wasn't hard). If I could use it in the traffic we have here, I probably would, but it's so stop and go (like 5mph to 40mph back to 5mph) that it's useless to idle through. |

It's really tough with a lightweight flywheel and aftermarket clutch.

all the time, also useful for creeping in those last inches in a tight garage. it's a sign of having learned the clutch
