mine came installed from the dealer (the regular silver hook) *shrug*. never cared to take it out except when i installed my license plate tow hook adapter

What do you mean the bumper is protected?

I personally have no problems with visible tow hooks, its just an accessory in my eyes.

If the hook is extended enough out, and someone backs into your car the hook will take most of the damage or at least help protect the bumper a little bit

The tow hook is there because sometimes you might want to have your car towed to work so that you don't waste precious miles of her life showing off all the awesomeness that is Z!
