1K isn't going to get you much but I would start with CIA like Stillen gen 3 and HFC.

jascas78 04-09-2013 09:32 PM

any good brand in particular for HFC?

asdfsammich 04-09-2013 09:37 PM

FI and Berks are well regarded. I think the difference is 300 vs 100 cell.

I say HFC, but ultimately choice is yours.

I would go straight to the private classified section and start deal hunting.

for 1k, HFC and a CAI if you install yourself. Slightly more if you have it done professionally.

Save your cash and then drop it on an exhaust.

I'm no expert on modding 370Z engines. Most of this comes from what I've read on this site and others, plus some experience with "classic" Muscle Car era engines. YMMV

Nissan is already wringing out most of what the engine is capable of doing at reasonable cost and still be reliable. Most mods will give, at best, only modest returns. Any mods that make an appreciable gain in power will be expensive (well above your $1k budget) and have a negative effect on reliability.

Also keep in mind that the engine control system is pretty high-strung and many mods will make a re-tune necessary (or at least desirable). The more mods you make, the greater the need for re-tuning becomes.
You can probably get away with HFCs or CAI without a re-tune, but probably not both (not real sure about this one, maybe someone else can confirm/deny).

Most of the mods that increase air flow (eg, better flowing exhaust) will only give a boost at higher RPMs and can decrease power at lower RPM. Great for the strip/track; not so much for a DD.

For me, all the above means that engine mods are not worthwhile unless you are racing the car, especially for someone on a tight budget.

All that said, if I were going to drop $1k on engine mods, I'd go with the best sounding exhaust system I could get and a tune.

I agree with SouthArk. Unless you are racing, legally, and really doing some serious modifications, these mods are for our own ego. Sound! We all like a little more growl.... Even though a cat back exhaust will not void your warranty (believe me I want one!) for any warranty work, the dealer can and will tell you they cannot work on the engine with the after market mods on the car. And, yes, any changes will affect all those little sensors with factory settings.

jascas78 04-10-2013 04:39 PM

Um wow there is two extremes here, i want way more growl. My car sounds way too restricted

washer mod. save $999.50!!

Exhaust (used?) or save up for a new one.
