Never happened, with ANY car I've owned with an automatic.
1. Arrive at destination.
2. With foot on brake STOP the car
3. Put car in park
4. Turn car OFF.
How hard can that be?.

And you can still lock the doors even when the vehicle is in gear? A conventional key will not be removed from the ignition unless the vehicle is in either neutral or parked gear. I don't know, I drive manual. We have "intelligent key" for the dumb drivers, so I figure will have the same effect. When vehicle not in P or N, doors won't lock.

Don't have that problem Op as I have a 6mt, but do this with my car probably once a day:

Im 24 and have ADD all my life (not this , but forgetful of small things) and I always place my fob in the cupholder. What I don't do, however, is take it out of the cup holder when I get out of the car after I turn it off lol. The funny thing is I always realize about one second after I close the door. Pretty much this reaction . I guess im just used to pulling the keys out of the ignition as this is my first push button car. Does anyone else do this constantly?

I could've sworn this car won't shut off unless the car is in park or neutral????????

I have a 6MT but I had my 08 Altima for 4.5years and never had an issue. Plus I think my Altima beeped at me if I shut it down in gear, does the auto Z do that?

I don't ever leave mine in gear unless I'm on a hill (which there are none here in Phoenix really).

The one time I had them in the cup holder, I did this, but my keys usually never, ever leave my pocket until I go to bed and empty my pockets.

I have an auto G37 and an auto 370Z, never EVER done this. I am very surprised to hear of anyone doing it. I just got off the phone with my wife to see if she has ever done this and the answer was no and then she said WTF are you asking this for (She DD's the Z)? I won't include the rest of what she said about anyone that may do that. She can be a mean woman when shes wants to be.

So...you don't feel the car start to move as soon as you let off the brake or get up?

Oh I hate that feeling. Has happened a couple of times when I forgot about the e-brake in my last car. Such a mini-panic attack.

Then there are times I do set the e-brake, but for some reason I feel like I'm still moving when I get up and have to double check it.

This is ridiculous. Unless this is your first car and you're not accustomed to the routine of putting the car in park there's no excuse for this lack of concern when you're driving a car. This is the type of thing that's going to cause an accident when the car gets away from you while you're not in it.

You can't seriously blame the push button. Sure ergonomic specialists should have put some kind of safety feature to keep the car on while in gear (unless the emergency shutdown procedure was activated). But in a regular turn key car you put the car in park BEFORE shutting the car off; your muscle memory shouldn't be affected by the push button until the point where you reach to turn the key and notice it's not there. If what you've been doing all along is try to turn the key to shut the car down, the key won't turn, THEN you realize you're still in gear then you've been bad all along and really shouldn't be on public roads with others.

Once or twice I could understand as a fluke occurence. **** happens. But if **** is happening to you all the time then you may need to reevaluate whether or not you're a danger to yourself and others.

Yeah I thought the first thing you learn from driving a car is put it in park before you turn it off. I can see leaving it in D, but in reverse?
